We lived in upstate NY and decided to retire to VA for it's milder weather. We chose Williamsburg for the rich history in the area. We selected Windsor Meade for the community size and the spacious Villas. We are pleased with our decision because of the interesting, friendly and caring people in Windsor Meade and the attractive look of the Community. It is a great place to live in retirement.
This is a bit biased review since I work for Cedarfield, which is also part of Pinnacle Living. I came to Windsormeade for training. The building is newer than Cedarfield. I especially liked the design of the neighborhoods, which the architecture and design of spaces contribute to creating a sense of home.
After 11 months of trying to sell our home in Maryland, we finally got a buyer with only one provision - out in three weeks. In that time we had to pack, sell, give away, and contract for window covers and interior painting, We moved in on 9 March after a most difficult drive with two cars and an upset senior cat. We were welcomed with open arms by our Marketing representative, introduced us to the Director and her Financial Director. We filled out the required health and financial statements, received keys to our new home, and were shown to a guest villa for two nights before our household good arrived by trucks the following day. Within hours of our arrival we dined with residents, were invited to dinner, were serenaded by a resident with a pocket trumpet. People from Environmental Services assisted in planting a tree we brought along and guided us through the intricacies of new appliances. We were in our early 80's, had recently suffered a broken knee and blood clot in a skiing accident, but we were welcomed and made to feel a part of a vibrant and caring community. We are optimistic and grateful for the help and friendship we have received over the nearly five years of being part of WindsorMeade of Williamsburg. We are in the perfect place for us. Marilyn Gray, the Director, is a gracious and caring lady who gets to know each resident, if they are willing.
The unexpected problems all started in the spring of 2014 when my parents received approval for residency at WindsorMeade, and their medical information was received in May 2014. However, on a holiday, Memorial Day, we received a call from WindsorMeade staff telling us not only that there were questions about my mother's physical condition but also that it was uncertain that they would be able to move into WindsorMeade even though their house had been sold, their belongings were packed, the moving trucks were on the way, and it was only a few days before the move to WindsorMeade. In my opinion, the executive director, Marilyn Gray, lacks the compassion needed to be an effective and compassionate care facility manager because she made the most difficult transition of my elderly parents' lives so much worse than it had to be. Moving my parents out of their one and only home of a large metropolitan area after 80+ years was traumatic enough, but then to face all of those questions and the uncertainty of the location of their next home at the last minute was horrible. The day after that Memorial Day phone call, my husband and I actually did the impossible - we drove around to my mother's doctors offices without appointments to gain clarifications from her doctors, which we accomplished within a few hours. Despite all of our efforts, Marilyn Gray still forced my mother to take a memory test with a WindsorMeade nurse on the day of her arrival even though she was exhausted from a sleepless night before (which she mentioned) and a long drive on the interstate highway. My mother was upset and humiliated to be forced to take the test, but she passed it with flying colors. The next day my husband shared our disappointment with Marilyn Gray. She indicated that she'd been on vacation and did not complete the medical review process for my parents. She did NOT apologize for the oversight, and she had the audacity to ask my husband to ask me to stop complaining about her to others. I feel that the initial experience with Marilyn Grey pretty much ruined our time at WindsorMeade for my entire family. Seven months later my father passed away. As soon as my husband's and my new house was built in 2015, my mother moved out of WindsorMeade and into our house with us. Although there are some wonderful staff and residents in WindsorMeade, I truly believe that the executive director, Marilyn Gray, lacks the compassion and kindness you would expect and hope to find in an expensive senior community.
Costs go up continuously. It’s such a rip off. Food is terrible. What they describe on the menu and what arrives are very different now (it used to be MUCH better. I think they cut budget for food and other services and scaled back on quality and quantity to get their $$.The residents do NOT come first here. Taking care of residents is NOT a priority. At all. They have ONE doctor that comes maybe once a week for the entire community, and he’s not even that good. He’s not even a gerontologist which is what type of doctor belongs in such a community. The people I know who live there have been on the waitlist for the apartments for OVER 2 YEARS!!! And they NEED to downsize!!!They are paying OVER $6,000/month and they live ALONE in their own housing!! And they do NOT get back ANY property appreciation. New owners buy at more than double what was paid, but the people selling get nothing. My uncle was in healthcare for almost a month and his wife was never allowed to visit. I understand COVID restrictions, but mental health and well being is also extremely important. Isolation leads to depression. If you have money to burn, and it’s no object for you and you can live with rising costs and decreased services, then maybe this is the place for you. If you can afford to access your own doctors, and you can get your own food, great. It is NOT worth the money they are paying at all to live independently. The positives, or why it got a star at all:Decent location, close to many amenities. The campus is lovely.Clubhouse is nice. The activities are decent. The neighborhood of single homes is quite lovely and feels like home. The staff in the fitness facility and dining halls are very kind and friendly. It is a gated community where they actually stop you.Facilities are clean.
My wife, Chris, and I moved to WindsorMeade in 2014 from Sun City Hilton Head, SC. We visited 10 similar facilities in SC, NC and VA. Once we saw WindsorMeade, we saw that the residences were superior to all the other places and we signed up the same day! Our experience here has been outstanding. The other residents and staff are very friendly and there is plenty to do. We still have our motor home and travel for a couple of months each year. I play golf, pickleball and bridge regularly and use our excellent exercise equipment. My wife swims, paints and enjoys our two Siamese cats and our Cavashon puppy. When needed, the health care operation is terrific! During the Coronavirus Pandemic, only three residents have tested positive for the virus and all recovered quickly. The location is perfect, with plenty of shopping and restaurants of all kinds within a mile of here. I highly recommend WindsorMeade to anyone looking for a first class continuing care retirement community.
This is the most friendly, down-to-earth place with dedicated team members and compassionate, intelligent and engaged WindsorMeade neighbors. They have incredible backgrounds and dedicate their time to so many things on and off campus. In just a few weeks, I have never heard so many people share their happiness about moving here, some over 10 years ago, and their continued happiness here. It's inspiring.
I want to share the difficult experiences that my family endured with WindsorMeade in Williamsburg, VA.The unexpected problems all started in the when my parents received approval for residency at WindsorMeade. However, on Memorial Day we received a call from WindsorMeade staff telling us not only that there were questions about my mother’s physical condition but also that it was uncertain that they would be able to move into WindsorMeade even though their house had been sold, their belongings were packed, the moving trucks were on the way, and it was only a few days before the move to WindsorMeade. We were shocked to learn that they would let us think that my parents were not completely approved to move in, despite multiple visits with them, interviewing my parents, getting all of their medical information sent, and taking their deposit. And we learned all of this at the last minute. In my opinion, the executive director, Marilyn Gray, lacks the compassion needed to be an effective and compassionate care facility manager because she made the most difficult transition of my elderly parents’ lives so much harder than it had to be. Moving my parents out of their one and only home of the Washington DC area after 80+ years was traumatic enough, but then to face all of those questions and the uncertainty of the location of their next home at the last minute was horrible. The day after that Memorial Day phone call, my husband and I actually did the impossible – we went to my mother’s doctors, without appointments, to get answers to Ms. Gray’s questions which we accomplished within a few hours. My mother was very upset and humiliated to be forced to take the test, but she passed it with flying colors. My blood pressure must have doubled that day. My parents, husband and I were so disgusted and disappointed. We questioned our choice to move them there. Even a senior staff member also agreed that my mother never should have been forced to take the test.It is beyond believe that such a lack of compassion is to be allowed in any retirement community, particularly one that reportedly filed for chapter 11 reorganization in 2013.The next day my husband shared our disappointment with Marilyn Gray. She indicated that she’d been on vacation and did not complete the medical review process for my parents in time. She did NOT apologize for the oversight, and she had the audacity to ask my husband to ask me to stop complaining!I feel that the initial experience with Marilyn Grey pretty much ruined our time at WindsorMeade for my entire family. My mother never felt completely safe there after the initial difficulty with Marilyn Gray. Seven months later my father passed away. As soon as our new house was finally built, my mother moved out of WindsorMeade and into our house with us. Senior staff didn’t even say thank you for our patronage after spending thousands of dollars there nor show any concern for our departure. To our dismay, we had to wait nine months before we received the refund because the next residents who took over my parents’ home in WindsorMeade were given six months to pay the fee. However, my parents were required to pay the entire fee immediately up front.Although there are some wonderful staff, facilities and residents in WindsorMeade, I truly believe that the executive director, Marilyn Gray, lacks the compassion and kindness you would expect and hope to find in an expensive senior community.
Walter and I moved to Windsor Meade, a Continuing Care Community, in 2011 with both of us walkingand in good health except for Walt’s diagnosis of Dementia. We were able to enjoy all the amenitiesthat Windsor Meade afforded—speakers, wellness center, entertainment, dining room dining andlectures at William and Mary via the Windsor Meade bus. As time passed Walt’s health declined and Ihad to have help come into our Villa to assist me to meet his needs. Then in the last two years of his lifewe had to take advantage of the health care offered in Hadley, the nursing home care. The Progressivecare offered by Windsor Meade benefited us.Now I remain in our Villa and until the Pandemic, I have enjoyed all the amenities Windsor Meadeoffers, as well as, have taken advantage of all Williamsburg has to offer. The Team Members haveworked tirelessly to keep us fed, safe and engaged.
My parents have been at Windsor Meade for I believe, almost 5 years. It is a beautiful place- we call it the "Country Club for Seniors"! They have a bocce ball court, beautiful gardens, a wood-working shop, pool, hot tub, state-of-the-art exercise facility (with nice flavored water bar), locker rooms, ballrooms, fine dining room, cocktail bar, library and a bistro for more casual dining. The staff from the front desk to the maintenance team (who helped rescue my dog from my locked car in 90+ degree weather and would not accept a tip- Thank you, Sam, Elwood & Scott!) have been so genuinely kind and caring towards my parents. We visit and dine there usually once a week or more, so we have a good idea of the staff and way things are run in the assisted living portion. I highly recommend Windsor Meade to anyone interested. We have had nothing but positive interactions there and they have made my parents very happy in their senior years!
