Employee Reviews for The Blake
2.73 out of 5 stars. Based on 165 reviews
Employees generally have positive things to say about working for The Blake. They appreciate the beautiful building, attention to great food, nice staff, lovely meals, and prizes. However, they also note that there is high turnover, corporate is focused on being top heavy and building new communities rather than taking care of the ones they have, no accountability for Regional directors, and management can be unprofessional and lazy. Employees advise management to start over, listen to employees, hire more staff, pay better attention to the character of the people they hire, and be fair. They also note that the pay is not great and there is a lack of communication and organization.Healthcare Nearby

Our Mother has been at The Blake for the past year and has received excellent care. The staff are thoughtful, kind, positive, patient, and are able to effectively manage her progressing dementia. No system is perfect and when we have had any issues the staff and management are responsive to correct and fix any problems. Our mother has been able to maintain a high quality of life with appropriate activites and excellent chef quality food. We realize that it takes a village to care for our mother and we are grateful we chose The Blake as our village.
It saddens me enormously that I need to change my review of the Blake. While my experience with Heather Clark, the Sales Director, has been absolutely outstanding and she has gone above and beyond for my mom, the Wellness Director and her team, which oversees the nurses, room cleaning, and day to day staffing for residents, has been shockingly bad. Because my mom, who was placed in Assisted Living, walked out of the building and down to the road's sidewalk on a quiet, low-staff Sunday, the Blake decided she had to be locked up in Memory Care, where she's been for 4 days. The wellness Director stated that she could not leave it unless family members would stay with her 24-7. Obviously not tenable, and at that point, if we did that, there's no reason to pay the Blake $6000+ a month. We are still working to get a qualified assessment by a doctor and hoping to come up with a reasonable plan of care, but all indications are that the Director of Wellness has no wish to alter her decision of lock down. Mom does have memory loss and some dementia, gets stubborn, and doesn't want to be bothered sometimes (very independent,) so I understand she is not easy to work with always. Too many conflicts of interest to list here. Bottom line - meet & ask questions of that Director before you sign a contract and be an advocate for your elder loved one if they get locked up for being a burden on staff. Hopefully this situation will get resolved soon and new protocols set at the Blake.
So far so good! My sister moved in September of 2020 so hasn't been able to take advantage of the many offerings yet. It's a beautiful place, much more to her tastes and not at all like a Facility. In fact, after a few weeks she asked me where the "Nurses Station" was. There isn't one! They provide concierge-type services where you call to the front desk with needs.I only got to taste the food once but it was delicious! Finally, it was less expensive than her previous assisted living facility to boot.
A 1 star only because I had to choose something....My mom was in the memory care for 3 months. The care was absolutely terrible. The staff sits together on their phones while the residents are left in front if the tv. Never given water to drink, fed a bunch of sugar and zero activities. I didn't know anyone whose loved one was happy there. Management only cares about the residents on the AL side! Why? Because they have a voice and can speak up...therefore the few good nurses and PA's get stationed over there. Please think before you fall for the pretty building and all the show on Facebook. You'll be sorry if you choose this place.
I find a few things very concerning at this facility, for starters one of your staff members tested POSITIVE for Covid-19 and was exhibiting symptoms (throwing up AND coughing) while serving food on the 4th of july. Now you have residents testing POSITIVE and you still allowed church functions, parties and visitors inside where Covid-19 was already running rampant. Has anyone been notified of possible exposure? If not they will now, are you providing the proper PPE to stop it from spreading further? The staff member that started it was exposing everyone inside and outside of the facility since she was the one driving your residents to and from there to places around the community, seems like a potential outbreak to me..I haven't seen any hydrostatic sprayers being used has the cart in front been stocked with gloves yet? Your activities aid was allowed to spread covid through your facility and expose people's loved ones that is your job to PROTECT their families pay a lot of money how would they feel knowing this? At what point are your director and administration going to take it seriously my guess is when they start losing money...the letter you sent out to staff and family was complete BS theres NO proper PPE NO hydrostatic sprayers do staff even wash their hands? Cause theres no gloves for them
Overall very pleased with the facility and staff. I think they do a great job on the upkeep of the facility as well as helping the residents. The rooms are quite spacious. I've had my father at other facilities in the past and this is probably the nicest one. If you are looking for at the Blake of Charlottesville as a new home for you or a loved one it's a great option.
