Thank you to the entire staff. My mother was there for 45 days for rehabilitation. My family was very impressed with how well they communicated about progress and care plans. This included personal calls from the care coordinator, physical therapist, speech therapist and so many others. The activity coordinator was responsive and helpful. The nurses and CNAs all knew her and were so cheerful and caring. We were able to talk to our mother everyday. Makaha is far and the facility doesn't look like much but the care, communication and compassion they provided is top notch. I highly recommend.

My dad went to Puu Wai O Makaha for rehab after being discharged from Queens. I was very concerned when he first went in as his condition was not good and I was very worried he would not regain his mental and physical abilities. After being there for 4 weeks with OT and PT, I was very happy that he was discharged back to his old self. The staff took care of his needs, even when he was disoriented and upset because he was not fully aware of where he was because of the stroke. I can't thank the staff enough there for getting my dad back to where he was before he suffered the stroke. Mahalo!

This place for one smells like death! It's like the dirty laundry of the beddings is stink and stays right outside of the rooms. Death is lurking in the hallways. Checking to see whose next.. this place sucks and I wish my family didn't put our mom in there! Stink like shit and they all immune to it. Death is very real and near for a lot of the patients.. please clean that place up with disinfecting oils and shit!

Used to work there. Don't recommend it to potential employees nor to potential residents. They treat the employees like slaves and have no appreciation or sense of loyalty, and they only treat the residents nicely until they run out of insurance coverage, then they quickly discard them like trash. Don't buy into their talk about "caring for residents like they are our ohana". All they really care about is the money.

After reading the two reviews before mine, I visited Pu'uwai O Makaha with fear and trembling, but left with a totally different perspective. What I saw was a VERY well kept facility in the heart of Makaha. I have been to several nursing homes and honestly thought this was one of the nicer ones. It's not Kahala Nui, but objectively it's clearly not "run down inside and out." Maybe they recently renovated?  The residents I saw seemed happy and cared for. The staff I met were happy and liked to joke and tease in a playful way. It reminded me of hanging out with my aunties. The place has a local style family feel that I liked. If you grew up in Hawaii and attended public school, you'd feel comfortable here. If you come with preconceived stereotypes about The West Side then maybe not. I looked and looked for the pack of "cats with festering wounds" and found only one cute kitty, probably a pet who was munching on dry cat food. No "unthinkable terrible smells" or buildings that "need to be demolished." I guess the old adage is true, "in life we see what we look for."

This place is gross. I didn't want to touch anything. Smells inside. Staff seemed inattentive. Smells like cat feces in outdoor area. Several cats with visible sores roaming about. Run down inside and out. The building looks like it needs to be demolished. I wouldn't place my worst enemy here. Sad!

First and foremost, I came into this completely unbiased, as I planned on keeping an open mind with my grandfather having to be here. From what I witnessed, I am appalled.Yes, basic insurance equates to basic care...however, we shouldn’t have to pay extra to ensure our Kupuna are treated with patience and decency. The first thing I noted was the Lobby being the nicest area in the entire facility, that, unfortunately, is not saying much. Restrooms for visitors...I have seen bigger porta-potties.There is this lingering smell in the air, mustiness, almost as though there is a feigned attempt to be clean, but it’s not quite there. It has the same hygiene as a camp mess hall.I understand there are Kupuna here that are suffering from mental and severe physical ailments as well, so imagine my surprise, and frankly, readiness to go off when I hear a Nurse’s Aide (if that was a Nurse, that’s even worse) talking to a patient, no one I even knew, with such impatience and rudeness;“Hurry up! I don’t have all day! He still not ready to get out the shower, guess he’s gonna fall asleep in the shower then!”We were passing by, my mother and I were leaving for the night after visiting my grandfather, and she made all these comments just as she left a room, she was quite loud. She turned and saw us behind her and laughed nervously, as though to play it off as a joke. She was the only one laughing. I wondered out loud, “why do you work here?” Let me tell you this would have been worlds worse for her had she been addressing my grandfather....and I regret not getting her name, but unfortunately for her, I have a great memory with faces, and I will be visiting often, when I see her again, I will report her. What I will say is she was doing rounds in the rooms that were near the entrance tonight (03/06/19). If you don’t have compassion and patience, don’t work with Kupuna. Shameful. And I’ll be keeping a close eye on anyone getting near my grandfather. For those in charge, I suggest you keep a close eye on these caregivers/aides...bedside manners are important, and if you are treating this job as “just another paycheck”, I kindly ask you to watch your back or find another job, you’re not gonna be jeopardizing someone else’s well being just because you are incompetent as an employee. This review is a warning shot. Shape up.

For One Thing It's Very Very Secluded. The Place Looked Like A Camp. ?Dry And Dusty Landscape.. When Entering The Lobby ? No One Was There.. Smelled A Bit But It Seems They Were Understaffed And That Makes A Difference With Healing.. But Simple Insurance, Simple Accommodation's With Much Needed Rehabilitation..

Compassionate, comprehensive care. I stayed here for 6 weeks for extended medical care in 2013, and received great care from the staff. The facility is beautiful, and had fun activities, and exuberant and attentive nurses. And kitties. Great ferals. Momma kitties with kittens, and relatively tame not skittish or vicious. Beautiful gardens, too. I miss the Golden Buddha shrine, the flowers, and the epic mountain view. Really felt like a rural home. :)
