The entrance of Aegis of Laguna Niguel. During the holidays, the decorations abound. It's been just over three years since my mother moved in initially in memory care, but she's improved and is now able to live in the assisted living section. Her room has a kitchenette, microwave, small refrigerator, sink, and a larger closet (her favorite part). The building is circular with a courtyard in the middle for fresh air & sunshine - my mother likes to do her puzzle books in the courtyard. From the moment my mother moved in, she was provided with a personalized care plan. Dietary restrictions & other issues that required staff monitoring were immediately implemented. Eric Medor, the General Manager, runs a tight ship - carpets are regularly cleaned, walls painted, furniture & decorating updated - just as one would do in their own homes. Eric has led Aegis during this unprecedented time of a global pandemic- every day I hear of assisted living residences having issues with virus infections and deaths- there are NONE at Aegis. The Aegis staff has kept all the residents safe, healthy, engaged, and I get a weekly update from Eric and photos of my mother from other staff members showing her engaged in activities - the latest was a photo of my mother doing chair exercises in the courtyard which our extended family loved seeing. Kelly Chong is not just the Marketing Director - Kelly has extensive knowledge about the psychology involved as ones brain begins having issues- Kelly has been an invaluable counselor. I can't say enough good things about this place - music, bus rides, outings to the flower fields in Carlsbad, local restaurants, picnics at the beach - it's like a family - everybody seems to know you - I'm greeted by name when I walk in the door - Paula Reznicek is the Receptionist and she's friendly, professional, and on top of everything.Everyone that has visited my mother at Aegis has remarked what a lovely place it is - and it's near the ocean (something very important to my mother).I looked at assisted living residences in the North County section of San Diego, and around Orange County - many places want you to make a substantial investment up front that you may not get back, or in some instances get a percentage back once your loved one leaves - this means you have a substantial sum of money tied up not earning interest or growing and on top of the initial investment you still have to make monthly payments. After doing LOTS of research & talking to financial advisors, Aegis was the perfect choice - Aegis gets their payments month-to-month.I've told multiple Aegis staff members often during this pandemic how proud they should be of themselves - everyone is safe and healthy - something that can't be said of many other places. My mother would have been overwhelmed in larger facility - she is comfortable, happy, and making lots of friends. I highly recommend Aegis of Laguna Niguel!!!
Aegis of Laguna Niguel has been a blessing for our parents. Our mother has been in the memory care wing for three years and she is very happy. She feels like the staff is family. During the Covid 19 pandemic, Aegis has adhered to the strictest protocols, yet kept the residents fully engaged in individual activities and exercise. They make it easy to communicate with our mother through FaceTime, calls, emails, and regular mail. They are always available to answer our questions when they arise. Aegis of L.N. truly is a special place.
Where to start. Seriously reconsider when visiting places to take your loved ones needing care. Aegis ain't it. Having had the "pleasure" of dealing with limited staff, I can tell you that competency and compassion are not on the leading list of qualifications. I seriously question if they even make the list. Highly recommend weighing your options before landing here.
My mother has been at this facility for six months now. I cannot say enough about how helpful they are. It was a sudden move after my mother was given the wrong meds at another facility. The entire senior staff helped to get her room ready. Updates on how she is regularly. But the best thing is that the director is easily available to everyone and greets you by name on a regular basis. After having her at other homes that were constantly asking for help with this or that it was so refreshing to find a place where they so efficiently handle it all.
Aegis is a superior place for care & a facility. Every single staff member goes above and beyond what anyone could ask. The humanistic approach with each of there residence is incredible. From caregivers to management all caring. My Mother now does activities everyday quality of life has increased. They will adjust food menu to each members request. Always take a sample of the fresh baked chocolate chip cookies when visitingAegis is an exceptional pick for my mother
We were honored for Mom to live at the beautiful Aegis of Laguna Niguel for the last year. We moved her from another local memory care facility where she stayed for just three months due to poor care. Kelly Chong, Marketing Director, listened to our concerns during our initial tour and selection process, and offered excellent recommendations for how Aegis could meet Mom's specific needs. The memory care staff then developed a care plan addressing every detail necessary to keep Mom safe, happy and fully engaged in daily life. The memory care staff, expertly led by Director Eric Esguerra, did an outstanding job of caring for Mom initially and as her needs increased. They were professional, kind, compassionate and they always protected her dignity. They were also kind and thoughtful with us, and provided frequent communications about Mom's status and needs, as well as updates with pictures and videos of Mom as she participated in activities. Mom loved the activities, especially the music events! The food was excellent, and Mom enjoyed a well-balanced diet prepared to her specifications. We also enjoyed a number of meals and special brunches with Mom at Aegis, each beautifully prepared and presented by the professional chef and his staff. Lee Kaufmann, General Manager, came to Aegis on St. Patrick's Day of 2017. In his relatively short time with the community, Lee has become familiar with the residents and their families. He is fully engaged in residents' needs, and is a committed advocate. He immediately instills confidence through his interactions, exuding warmth and openness. No need is too great or too trivial for Lee's attention. We unfortunately lost Mom last week. The finest example of compassion was how Eric and Lee cared for Mom and for us during this time. They went far above and beyond any expectations we could have had, for which we will be eternally grateful. The special Aegis team is what clearly differentiates the community from others offering memory care services.
Since my previous review, there has been a change in management of the Laguna Niguel facility and the level of staffing has been reduced. I cannot in good conscience wholeheartedly recommend this facility. While the caregivers try very hard, there are not enough of them to provide adequate care. I have been forced to consider other facilities.
We just started my mom's residency at Aegis this week and we could not have been more blown away by their level of service. Every single person employed there was so genuine and kind. The food is really fantastic there. The calendar for each day offers so many different options for the residents to enjoy and promote interaction with one another, without being or seeming too overwhelming for those who may not be the most social of butterflies. I really am beyond impressed and frankly, quite relieved to not have to stress or worry too much about the hands my dear mother is in during this time of her life.
My mother is a resident of Aegis of Laguna Niguel. We are beyond pleased. In retrospect, we should have moved Mom from her home long before we did, but that decision was so difficult and heart-retching that my siblings and I limped along far longer than we should have regarding Mom's situation. The staff at Aegis is wonderful, the care is superb, the communication is great, the food is delicious, and my mother has truly found a new family.
While no place is perfect, Aegis comes close. Prior to coming to California my mother had been in five different residences on the East Coast. Aegis has been the right place for her. My mother has been there for almost 7 years now. While at Aegis during her deterioration she has had fabulous attention and caring from the staff. The small size of Aegis lends itself to that type of care. I had not seen that anywhere else she had lived. There have been times when things haven't run so smoothly, but everybody who works there steps up when something is missing. It's like running your own home - sometimes everything works well and sometimes it doesn't. The management is responsive as well as responsible. It is like a family there.I couldn't be happier. As a daughter/caretaker I couldn't ask for more. I know my mother is cared for when I am not there. Mark, who has been the director for a year, has made really good hires. It may take longer to find the right fit, but ultimately, he finds the person he needs. The daily peace of mind about my mother and where she lives is overwhelming. I couldn't be going on this journey without my Aegis family. There is a wonderful spirit to Aegis - a very important feeling for older people. It is alive over there and a wonderful place.
I was hoping to find more reviews on this page. I wanted to see what others have experienced. Last year I visited 3 of the "top" senior living facilities in the area. I preferred a different one but my mother liked Aegis so there she went. She has been at Aegis for almost a year. I am happy that she is not living on her own and that she has made some great friends. However, I have to agree that they are severely understaffed and their turnover is alarming. Perhaps that is a usual occurence in these types of communities. There are some AMAZING caregivers there and some not-so-great. I do not think there is a standard training program which may be the problem. We constantly "reward" those great caregivers on our own. That helps us get the attention needed. The food is average but for what the cost is I think they can do better. They focus a lot on desserts! Is that a usual thing?! My mother has gained quite a bit of weight because of that! Regarding med management I suggest you look at what the caregiver is giving you rather than just popping the pills. I also suggest you know what you are supposed to get so you get the proper meds at the proper time. There has been occasion where my mom did not get a morning pill because "the pharmacy had not yet delivered the meds" which is not acceptable. Ron's Pharmacy does automatic deliveries to the facility and you should never "run out" of medication. Again, because staffing is an issue perhaps there are not enough people to follow up. There are some activities here but I think there should be more. The residents need to get out more and because of staffing issues there is not always a driver to take them out. I was assured that transportation would not be an issue when I first met with the director but on occasion there have been issues. Make sure you schedule doctor visits with the front desk as early as possible so you do have transportation. I also might add that I have made several requests to management and it is not immediate that they get resolved. So you do have to keep on top of them.Again, for the amount of money you are paying I would expect much more. I welcome feedback from other resident's children to see if this is isolated or they are experiencing the same. I also welcome feedback regarding other facilities. Maybe this is as good as it gets!!
This facility seemd like the ideal place to have your mother or father. From the outside you think it is pretty, decorated well, and has a nice atmosphere. But let me tell you that this is not the case. In the unit that is locked the ratio is about 1:8, which is way too high. They will bathe your loved one when it suits them, not when the family member want to be bathed. And if you refuse at the time they want, you don't get bathed that day.You are charged for every little thing. Need help getting dressed, that's a charge. Need help eatting, that's a charge. Can't find your glasses, that's a charge. Before you know it, the fee that you thought was high to begin with is sky high but you feel like it is so difficult to move your parent that you continue on anyway. The food situation is terrible. The food that is served is processed, Costco-like packaged food that is gross. If your parent doesn't eat, they take the food away and that is it for that meal. If that continues to happen, your parent will simply lose weight. there is no intervention by the staff. They weigh them and track the loss but continue to let them lose the weight. Finally, but most importantly, they require the use of medication to "sedate" the patients there. Patients will be sedated for walking around too much, talking too much, or simply not complting with what the staff wants them to do. The demenia patients are left to wonder around the halls sometimes frightened and confused, sometimes crying. If you love your relative, do not house them here. It is not as it appears.
Our dad has been at Aegis Laguna Niguel for 2 1/2 years. We have always felt that he is well taken care of, physically, mentally and socially. Staff knows residents and family on a first name basis and sincerely cares about our family and our dad’s well being. We love the stable, safe and family atmosphere of Aegis. It really feels like a home for our dad. We have never worried for his safety and know he is loved and cared for by his Aegis family. We couldn’t imagine him anywhere else. We are grateful that Aegis was a choice for him when the need arose for him to have assisted living and the transition to memory care was practically seamless. ( Thank you Eric and team for coordinating everything when we moved our dad from his assisted apartment to his memory one)
Of all the assisted living or nursing homes I have been exposed to, Aegis Living Laguna Niguel is definitely the best and top quality place in regard to:1. Overall facilities in layout, upkeep and cleanliness, safety features. etc.2. Personnel (management and it's employees) in competence, friendly and caring attitude toward the residence, and overall atmosphere of the place.3. Meals served in healthy, tasty, and well balanced.4. gathering of families of the residence for every major holidays with good foods and good times.5. Recognition of the birth days of each residence with birthday cake and happy songs.6. Many more (too numerous to list here).
You should educate your Caregiver to knock the door before entering the room.Because Clarence, Filipina Caregiver just comes in and out as she please and to be more respectful with the nursing team that took care of my Mom during this difficult time. She is just a simple Caregiver not a nurse to make decisions.I dont care if she is been working a lot of years there that doesn't change the fact that she is a Caregiver that must assume her role within her scope of practice.& to stopped rearranging the furniture while the Pt is there and demanding questions like who open or closed the door and her Bossy approach and aptitude with the nurses thinking that she is in Charge.I will delete this comment after you provide right education to her. Problably other supervision never told her anything because they think is not a big deal.I know this can be resolved talking.
Every time here I come here to play the piano or teach music to one of the residents, they all seem very happy! The facility is in top condition--very clean!!! No foul odors or anything I could even think of negatively...All of the staff is extremely nice from the front desk to the individual caretakers!Certain special staff that I work with such as Allison, or Susanna are always going out of their way to be especially friendly to all of the residents!!! 😃😁☺️
