26 bed hospital included surgery, nursery, dietary, laboratory, radiology, laundry, and a convent on the second floor.

The hospital was dedicated on May 26, 1953. The cost of the entire project was funded from the gifts of Towner County residents and the remainder was provided by the order of the Sisters of St. Francis.

A new chapel and chaplain’s suite were completed in 1957. A decade later, the Sisters of St. Francis decided to nearly double the size of the hospital with an addition, dedicated in May of 1968. The addition included a new wing of patient rooms, an ambulance garage, the emergency room, and new laboratory and radiology rooms.

Due to financial and recruiting struggles, the Sisters of St. Francis decided to either close or sell the hospital. Towner County Residents responded to this challenge and on July 1, 1992, the ownership and direction of Towner County Memorial Hospital changed. The facility became an enterprise owned by the county and the name was changed to Towner County Medical Center.

In 1995 a new medical clinic, emergency room, x-ray suite, physical therapy room, nursing station, drive through emergency garage, laboratory, medical records, and birthing room were constructed on additional land donated by Terry and Babe Belzer.

Throughout the years, there have been multiple community members who have helped keep TCMC viable through donations, hours of volunteer work, and serving as board members.

Towner County Medical Center is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization that provides inpatient and outpatient hospital care, long-term care, clinical services, retirement housing and community child-care. The Boards of Directors of the Medical Center, The Hospital Authority and The Living Center serve without compensation.
