My mother resided at Shenandoah's assisted living community from May 2013 until her death in January 2018. During that time, many of the staff became like extended family, & she generally received good care. About a month ago, my father needed skilled care, following a hospitalization. We were thrilled to find Shenandoah had an open bed, & confident he would receive quality care. To say we were greatly disappointed is putting it mildly. Dad has moderate dementia & very limited short-term memory. Using a call bell is not something he can retain. He also gets frequent urinary tract infections. Upon admission, I told staff that he would stay dry, & avoid infection, if they would go in every 4 hours, & assist him with toileting. Numerous times, we arrived to find his Depends so saturated it had spilled out onto his clothes. His skin became red & excoriated. Throughout his stay, we addressed the issue with numerous members of the nursing staff individually, the nurse manager of the unit in a care planning meeting, & the facility's nursing director. No improvement occurred. On the day he was to be discharged to an assisted living facility, I found him more confused, so weak he was slumped to the side in his wheelchair & could barely stand with the assistance of 3 people (myself & 2 CNAs), & he threw up within minutes of my arrival...symptoms that, for him, are hallmarks of infection. He also had a low-grade fever. When he further deteriorated, I asked staff to call 911 for transport to the emergency room. A short time later, the Director of Nursing arrived in the room & informed me she'd halted the 911 call, in order to first do her "own assessment." She felt that the vomiting may have been due to something he ate, & that what for him constitutes a fever (99.1°F), wasn't a particular cause for concern. She also attempted to have him stand, despite his weakness & by then, his increased shortness of breath. I immediately put a stop to that, as my Dad also has very poor heart function, & called a private ambulance service for hospital transport. After I'd made arrangements, she later offered to call 911. A day later, Dad was diagnosed with C. Diff colitis & put on antibiotics. I don't know what has happened to their quality of care in recent years, but I hope they quickly rectify it so that it again becomes safe, & no other residents experience what my dad endured.
Did not feel my Mom got good care. I realize because of Covid they did not want people in except for appointment but it felt like they were hiding something. Went to visit one time and found it depressing and dingy. My Mom was wheeled into the sunroom hair unkept hospital gown on instead of clothes and clearly unhappy. My Mom has dementia and I felt like they didn’t want to help her because of it. They called one day and said they were releasing her because she would not co-operate and couldn’t do anything to help her. I will say the greeter at the front door was very friendly and helpful. My sister has worked in nursing homes as a nurse and director and feels the same way and I worked in a hospital setting for 45 yrs. I would not send another family member here or give them a recommendation. Disappointed in a place that is suppose to be the best.
I don’t usually write reviews but in this instance I feel like I need to because others need to know that this facility is not what it used to be. My grandmother was there several years ago after a knee replacement and she did very well there and the facility was great; no complaints whatsoever. My other grandmother however, was there in November and December of 2018 and for us the overall experience was terrible. During her stay, things were stolen, there were a couple of therapists that were hateful talking and pushed my grandmother so hard on her exercises that she was unable to stand for the rest of the day. We witnessed times that other residents were neglected during meal times. When it was very clear that they needed help being fed, they were instead left to fend for themselves and thus spilling most of their food and not able to eat a full meal. Once when the aid didn’t realize anyone else was around my mother overheard a resident ask for assistance with her meal. The aid then rudely refused to help her then proceeded to announce down the hallway to coworkers that she couldn’t believe that the resident would ask such a thing. Lastly, not long before my grandmother (who has dementia) was scheduled to leave, she took a bad fall that resulted in broken ribs and irreversible trauma to her body and mind. An aid left her in the room by herself while she was in the process of getting dressed that morning. She was supposed to have her shoes on but instead stood up in her stocking feet and slipped on the tile floor. I could go on with more stories of neglect but I hope I have made my point with what I have shared. There were great, caring, knowledgeable CNAs and nurses there, for which we are very grateful but overall I’m sorry to say I would never recommend this facility to anyone.
My mom was here off and on for 2 months before passing. During that time, she was treated with great care by all and I was made to feel like family. I used to have such negative feelings about nursing facilities, but Shenandoah has restored my faith. Most of staff has been there for a long time which says a lot. I'd recommend to anyone.
My dad has been a resident for 2 years. The staff is very kind and understanding. There is one CNA he calls "Number 1" because she told him that his needs, not her wishes, are #1. Most of the nurses he has reflect that level of caring. Our physician said it is the only place he would put his father.
