This is one of the finest residential units you can find in Palo Alto , they have great cafeteria and full services. The events coordinators really make for a great time and a variety of events to keep interesting. The facility is in excellent condition and the director of the facility does a great job keeping the place running well. The ED is fantastic at communicating with residents and making their experience the best. Highly recommend this place for families.
I have lived at Moldaw for seven years. I am still delighted with it. They have been particularly fabulous during Covid--making sure we are tested weekly and providing us with shots. It's a great place to live--and a great place to make friends. There are activities (like trips to the deYoung). I recently saw an immersive exhibit about Van Gogh which was inspirational. These past two years have offered some challenges as far as our travels have gone, but things are beginning to pick up.Dinner is always enjoyable with new residents joining us. The dining room offers quite a variety and our chef is accommodating about trying new dishes. If you're looking for a wonderful place to live, Come Join Us.Sally B
My father has lived at Moldaw for 13 years now and I can finally write a well-informed review. Across multiple managers over the years Moldaw has remained a consistently high-quality place to live for my 90 year old father. He smiles when you ask him about how he likes his home and the community surrounding him. It's really two things: the extra-ordinary staff--right now Moldaw has the very best executive director its ever had--and the community offering. Community has kept dad from feeling lonely and isolated--even through the pandemic. Also, less importantly, we love the amenities, like the pool and the beauty of the inside space. Up until the pandemic Moldaw had great events. It is a very nice place to live. Because of the way it is structured--the quality protocols in place--i feel confident it will stay this way. Worth every penny.
Dad moved to Moldaw assisted living 3.5 years ago at age 89. His memory wasn't great at that time. He has a beautiful room with a full kitchen and a balcony that he loves, with his view of the Santa Cruz mountains. Embedded in the JCC complex, there is a feeling of aliveness as nursery school kids play down below in the morning, and regular activities in the courtyard. He could (pre covid) attend activities in Assisted Living, Memory Care, Independent Living at the JCC. There were (pre-covid) movies in the newly redone movie theatre 4x/week. The food is fantastic. I love joining him for dinner along with other residents. The caliber of the residents is high, with such interesting life stories (like the woman with a Ph.D. in physics who ran the USA non-military nuclear energy program for 45 years). The staff is amazing. In this very difficult year of Covid, they were so kind to him, checking in frequently since residents had to remain relatively separate from one another. The thing I love the most is that the involve the family in care decisions and treat us as a part of the team with great communication via phone or email or in person. They truly care about the residents which is apparent in the way they care for them. I highly recommend Moldaw for people who value quality of life.
Moldaw is a very nice structure, located in a reasonable area, with a care staff that is very good. They maintain the premises very well, have some nice amenities, like free valet parking, and keep everything looking great. Moldaw also shares the enclosed campus with the JCC, which has one of the premier gyms in the area, which is a great resource.Unfortunately, I don't think the facility is really geared towards seniors with more complex care needs, despite some truly wonderful caregivers on the staff. Moldaw strikes me as a great place to come into as an independent living adult, with all cognitive faculties intact. From that starting point, it would make sense to utilize the assisted living or memory care that they have on premises as you age in place, without having to be subjected to the potential trauma of a sudden move to a totally unfamiliar environment and care staff. If you're starting out with a disabled, elderly adult moving directly into the AL or MC units, however, you would be well advised to research the alternative facilities in the area that suit your specific needs very closely. As this is itself a grueling and often misleading process, you would also probably be well served by using a variety of reference sources to inform you about the subtle differences between one facility and another. While the staff that performed the day-to-day care at Moldaw was very good, we found that communicating with management about our care needs and expectations was excruciatingly difficult and tense. It did not help that we found ourselves in the position of constantly pushing back against thousands of dollars of unexpected charges every month, only to realize that no two parties within Moldaw had the same understanding or knowledge of our agreement. We never met the executive director of the facility in the year that we were staying there, and our emails directly to him went unanswered until the very end.In the end Moldaw was not a good fit for our situation, which came to involve specialty memory care, and we decided to move to a different facility on the peninsula.
Fees are extremely high and sales will promise you the world. It's true that care staff are extremely pleasant, friendly and loving for the most part. The physical facility is also bright, well-designed and well kept-up.But once you're in, they start pressuring you to procure private care services at an additional cost of thousands of dollars.Long-term residents counseled me that this happens to everyone and advised me to just push back on these requests. But it gets tiring. Also, management is totally disengaged and possibly incompetent. They will schedule meetings with you during work hours and then cancel with little or no notice. I've shown up for meetings with management several times and been told "he/she was not available." Very bad form for a facility that markets itself as high-end.
Like most places that give elderly care the Moldaw has its pros and cons. And in general is better then most. I move my mother here earlier in the yearPros- great campus. Linked into the JCC this place does not feel like I am dumping her someplace to die. Good energy from the school and pool area + generally a good, friendly staff Cons- some of the management seem disconnected with reality and need to bridge the gap better between a business, a facility to help elderly and how to respond to a vocal minorityUpdate- my mother after a hard 6 month transition now is loving the place. The JCC, outings etc are fantastic... It's a hard transition but working out great
after only a phone evaluation on the cost and environment for care for an elderly father who needs great care, this place makes it sound prime until you call and they state that residents are not overseen in skilled nursing after they go back to their rooms, what, the person we spoke with said our father would be less at risk of falling in his own home with a caregiver, pretty bad care I suspect and the cost is over the top as well.
