Holly Springs Senior Citizens Home Description
In 1976 the Lord began stirring in the heart of Preacher Wade involving a ministry to the elderly. It was in his heart for the church to build and operate a Senior Citizen's Home.
While this was heart on his heart Preacher Wade drove to Hendersonville, to the Skyland Hotel where he knew Preacher Joe Parsons was staying as he preached a meeting that week in the Asheville area. When he arrived at the hotel and located Preacher Parsons, Preacher Wade told him his burden regarding building a home to care for senior citizens. Preacher Parsons responded to him by saying: "Well, well, what about that. To think that one of these days I could be in the shape where I wouldn't even know where the bathroom is and wouldn't be able to feed myself. Maybe one of God's little sheep could be there to watch after me and care for me." This statement by Parsons confirmed in the heart of Preacher Wade what God had been dealing with him about for weeks. On March 7, 1976, Pastor Huntley presented a plan for the Senior Citizens Home, carefully outlining the proposed operating guidelines. The plans were for the home to be run by the church as a nonprofit operation, with the pastor and three board members from the church. The proposed plan was accepted by an overwhelming majority with a standing vote. Preacher Wade approached Mrs. Elizabeth Briscoe about purchasing some land from her on which to build the home. She replied, "I'll give it to you. Not sell it to you, I'll give it to you." Mrs. Elizabeth Briscoe donated approximately eight acres of choice roadside land, not far from the church. (Unknown to her at the time of her gracious gift, she would become a resident there herself.) On August 15, 1976, a ground breaking service was held on the building site. Rev. Joe Parsons preached to the church about the grace of God and encouraged the church to give God the praise for all that has been and will be accomplished. Just over a year later, on October 30, 1977, the dedication service for the Holly Springs Senior Citizens Home was held in the front parking area of the home. Aulton Cole, long time song leaser of the church, led the congregation in singing "Where We'll Never Grow Old." Joe Parsons preached the dedication message, reading from Chronicles 7 about Solomon's dedication of the temple at Jerusalem, and how the Lord promised to keep His mind and heart on these continually. The Holly Springs Senior Citizens Home is a thirty-two bed facility, including six private and thirteen semi-private rooms, a large dining room, a lobby sitting room, a small beauty and barber shop, laundry and storage rooms, a sun porch, a large modern kitchen, and a large activity room with fireplace. The home was opened for occupancy on Wednesday, February 1, 1978, with nineteen people arriving that same day. The senior citizens' home continues as an outreach ministry of the church and as a service t many in and around the Holly Springs community.
