Can I give 0 stars?I visited the Memory Care of this facility and left so discouraged for anyone that has to live there and for the future of elder care in this country. It was so apparent that Sunrise is hyper-focused on money and not care. Ads inside the Memory Care living room for their insurance services, a giant check written to the "resident" when you walk in the front door, for $2000, I guess promoting the sale they have going on. Not once was the focus on what was best for the resident with memory care, or how they will make life a little easier for the care giver. Zero compassion. The person who gave my tour, Paul I think, continued to refer to me and introduce me to the staff by the wrong name. He also could not remember if I was looking for my mom or grandmother. Little details being missed like this make me concerned that keeping my mom safe is going to be a challenge. I really am not trying to be funny when I say this, but I felt like he was trying to sell me a car. He didn't act like he had any passion for the residents or the care of the elderly. He was following a script and using sales pitches that were outlined for him by Sunrise corporate. He even hinted at putting in a holding deposit to lock in the 15% discount they had going on.For those wondering, pricing is based on the level of care they determine your loved one needs. It is also based on the size of the apartment, and amount of pills they take. The rate ranges pretty significantly per month for these differences. They can also reevaluate at any time they want to, although he couldn't really explain when or why they would. When I asked about staffing ratios no answer was ever given. He continued to run around the question telling me it depends on need. I asked several times what that meant and still no answer was given. He couldn't even say that they meet state requirements. This was when I knew I would not have my mom live in this community. Another red flag, they do not have a nurse in the building 24/7. They have a nurse on call after hours, for anyone doing research this is not a good thing. This means that at any time something goes wrong when the nurse isn't in the building the care team will just call 911 and have them go to the hospital. For anyone that knows anything about Alzheimer's or Dementia a hospital visit or stay for someone can be devastating to their mental and physical well being, moving them further along in the disease much faster than they would have other wise.Laundry and house keeping once a week, a lot of places provide every day laundry, as memory care residents like to wear the same thing regularly, and house keeping 3 days a week or more as needed. When we visited the memory care unit, the bragged about activities calendar was not being followed, instead the residents were not engaging with anyone, just sitting around watching TV which I found very sad. Furniture had stains on it, and the fridge looked like it had been kicked in. The model room we saw smelled like there was a natural gas leak, and when I mentioned that, it was ignored. The rooms were pretty large, private bathroom, and mini fridge and counter to look like a little kitchen, but no appliances. Contrary to other Memory Care unites that provide studios so the residents are encouraged to not spend a lot of time in their room and engage in activities. Hey but at least when we left we were given a chocolate cream pie. I understand that paying for assisted living and memory care can be a challenging thing for many families but Sunrise doesn't seem to even offer a decent price for the lack of services they provide so I would continue to do your research and find a place with a flat rate that is a little higher but where they will focus on the right things, you and your loved one's well being
My review is of the Falls Church site, not Alexandria on Duke Street. And this is not about quality of care because neither I nor a family member resides in a Sunrise facility. This is about the hiring practices of this organization. I interviewed for a part-time position for which I or most would be qualified to do. It seemed, at the conclusion, that I wojld be hired after other HR requirements were completed. They really needed this position filled ASAP. Well as the next few weeks moved on and after I had done the remaining HR required things, I wondered what was going on. I inquired and basically was given the "runaround" by the very person I had the interview with. Couple of more weeks passed and I had this feeling that they had hired someone else. Just had that nagging feeling which turns out was right. After pushing Sunrise's corporate office, I finally got a call to that affect. Now any corporation has a right to hire who they want. My complaint is that I spent many hours going thru the HR process. They should have been honest and told me they were going a different direction rather than being deceptive. So the point here is that if they were that deceptive when it comes to hiring a part-time concierge, it makes me wonder about the real issue of quality of patient care. This organization should be ashamed of themselves. Should the time ever come when I need the services of such a business, I would never consider them. Never!
Can you rate less than a one? This is our first experience with assisted living. They are horrible here. PLEASE do not send your loved ones here if they are spirited, don’t want to be read tired old scripture and play bingo all day. If your loved one wants “to maintain their dignity” in their own words, this is NOT the right place. They have done a good job at getting you in, then they start treating you differently and magically the assessment they made originally changes along with the pricing. It is VERY obvious, especially after reading multiple negative reviews with the same overall consensus, that this place is only out for the money. The outings are non existent, although you are sold on the fact that they take many trips, movies, etcetera. It’s all lies! I do drop ins quite frequently and this is one of the most boring places I’ve ever been to, I feel bad leaving many times. This is not a home! I am thankful that there are other places in the area and we have options. This particular place is run by someone that has no experience with how to speak to families and is power hungry. Many of the staff have confided that they are unhappy here and you can tell. How can you advertise 24 hour service? This place locks down at 8, the residents are put to bed early like they are children and if you are a resident and walk around you may get chastised. This is a fake Disneyland. Whatever you do, do your research! Research the reviews on consumer sites. You will get the real deal and then you will see some other reviews probably from staff that sing other location’s praises BUT NOT THIS LOCATION. Something is wrong with this place. They have been through about NINE directors and that is scary. Turnover like that means something is broken. The food is bad, they are understaffed, they don’t clean well, the patients are usually lined up in front of the television, they have had many patients “get out” so now they are OVERLY cautious because they cut corners and can’t keep staff. I just spoke to one of my employees who used to work here. He also verified that this was not a good choice. They have several employees that are difficult to understand and really LOUD nurses as if just because you’re there, you must be deaf.If you have nice things beware because they willgo missing, only to be replaced by someone else’s not so nice things. We had new towels that all matched, not any more... we had expensive pants that are still missing and it was suggested by a staff member to remove our loved ones jewelry from the premises. Wow!!! Subtle hint...huh?We came in with our own meds and plenty of vitamins, they were supposed to return as they provide (in other words... we pay for) the meds. We are still waiting!Run somewhere else, this is not a place worth the money they charge. I really mean, yes literally...RUN!
I love the place where I live! So what if I am 42 years young living with seniors or old people? We are all human and have the right to live in a place of love, happiness, joy, and of course I think the first place to have rubber ducks (My Quackie family) as friends. I love helping with activities! The more involved with Sunrise I get, the more happier I get! Sunrise of Alexandria is awesome! If we keep our residents happy, I will keep myself happy as well! 😁 Shine on, Sunrise! 😎 - Johnny D.
