Re-posting my review from 2 weeks ago...My mom was sent to the hospital due to a fall at our home a few months ago. After she stayed there for a couple days the doctor recommended that she go into a rehab facility to improve her walking. There were many facilities that showed interest in taking care of my mom and in the end I chose Orinda Care Center cause it was closer to our home and that I would be able to visit her more often when I'm off from work. After her first week at the facility I scheduled a visit to see her and she was happy to tell me good news that she has been walking more with the help of her physical therapist. I also asked her about how she felt about the place in general and she said that the nurses were helpful with her needs, food was good, she would watch tv and talk to her roommate sometimes when she felt like it. My mom likes to be to herself so I thought that was really funny.I'm glad I took a chance on Orinda even after reading the previous bad reviews. The place may be small but I think that was the best part about it because my mom was getting more attention from the staff and I could tell they genuinely cared about her. My mom was safely discharged back to us at our home cause she no longer needed rehab services to walk. Thank you staff for all that you do during this pandemic and especially for taking really good care of my mom! I'm leaving this review to show how much I appreciate you all and to keep up the good work.
I came in last week asking about services for my grandfather. The staff was very compassionate and knowledgable about his condition. They were very transparent about my options for care. I only want what is best for my grandfather as he is getting old and doesn't remember things as well as he used to.The facility looked good. The floors were clean and they look like they have enough staff to care for everyone. Even though this facility is far from my house I am considering it as an option.
This facility has a lot of great things to offer. This is where you see the real dedication of the employee. Every single staff works very hard. They're so passionate about their work. Managers and line staff are just exceptional! They love their job and care so much for the facility and most especially the residents. Perhaps, some reviews says otherwise but as a current employee I would say that this facility is one of the best place to work at and to have the family have their loved ones get taken care of considering the outstanding staff that were recently hired and of course the staff who's been there for years. They all go above and beyond.
They have changed their name to Orinda Rehabilitation & Convalescent Hospital . New owners is what I have read. See Reviews on Google. No STARS !!!!! My sister was sent here for rehabilitation from a stroke, from John Muir Hospital. 3 hours of being taken there my sister fell out of bed hit her head. She lay on the floor for over 10 min calling for the nurse because the call button was as not connected. When the nurse came in she told her to shut the fuck up! and she was going to die! I asked the nurse Alicia how she fell out of bed? she said they can't restrain her. I said a bed can have 3 railing and that is not restraint that is saftey. She said they don't have any to put on the bed. "But they can put some pillows on the floor for when she falls again" I told my sister to call 911. And I called 911 also. They said my sister was on the other line,so I hung up. When I hung up. The nurse took my sisters phone from her and told them they had already called for a transport to take her back to John Muir. I called my sister back and she told me this . I again called 911 and said to go get her now! To be continued ........after I call an attorney ! John Muir Hospital said they are going to file a complaint on them.Look at the reviews on google !
My mom came to OCC after recovering from a medical condition that landed her in the hospital from another facility in Berkeley. We heard the stories about the change in ownership - private to larger corporation with many facilities - and we witnessed many of the changes that took place over the past two years. Is everything perfect, Nope... do they have nurses and staff at the facility today that really care about the patients and work hard every day taking care of our loved ones - YES!The best part about this facility is the staff. Angela, Venus, Leo, Gregg, Don, Brian and many others tended to my mom and the other residents every day. Some nurses had to deal with some residents that were from a different generation or may have been in early stage dementia. At one minute they were called "n-word" or some other demeaning / derrogatory name and the next minute they were being asked to help that person to the bathroom or to clean them up after they had soiled themselves, or to feed them... these nurses and CNA's were / are AMAZING!Daily activities by two of the hardest working activities people that I have seen in any facility (my parents have been in a few) provide residents with daily exercise, bingo, flower arranging, drawing and movie days. There are also many large hosted family holiday events - Mothers day, Easter, Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc - throughout the year.About a year ago, the facility received a nice face lift - changed carpets to hardwood floors, updated paint in many areas. There were some staff changes - but the core team of CNA's and RN's always remained. The current team - admin and RN's and CNA's are working well together. We were there regularly and we were actively involved with the staff and the team that would regularly provide care for my mom. People entrust care of the loved ones to these facilities and then assume that people will be able to meet all of the needs of their loved ones. The staff tries, but the reality is that EVERYONE there needs a lot of care and there are only so many staff members to patients. We supplemented my mom's care with some wonderful companion care providers (CareBuilders at Home - contact Bryan Ricks and recommendations from staff)... for those families that can afford to provide this service, this is a great resource that will allow you a better view of all the activities of the staff each day and get the help for your loved one when the staff is really busy.Orinda Care was a great final resting place for my mom, we are grateful for her time there and for the wonderful people we met there.
Mediocre. What happened to this place? The first night, we found the patient in a wheel chair with his back to the table and his food tray on the other side of a big round tabletable that was too high to eat and way too far to reach (even if he was facing it). This was half way through dinner, so the tray had not just been delivered. Repeatedly had to request the prescribed Ensure and was given Boost instead, which was half the protein. He lost weight, couldn't even bend his knees after weeks of rehab. I was told he was receiving rehab twice a day and once was in the evening. NOT. When we were there, he went to bed shortly after dinner with no more rehab, even though the whole purpose of the stay was rehab. The staff were very friendly, caring and nice, but the overall care was mismanaged.
This review is for the staff I encountered today, my first time at Orinda Care Center. I parked in the back parking lot and found myself in a staff area down below the resident facilities. The staff members helpfully pointed me in the right direction and got me into an elevator and then to the front desk as well. The rooms were clean and there is even a very pretty meeting room with a beautiful view. The resident I spoke with said she very much enjoys this living facility. And I enjoyed talking to the staff at the front desk and downstairs.
My 83 year-old father-in-law tore both quadriceps tendons and went here for rehab after surgery. The caregivers were all friendly and responsive. The physical therapy in particular was a positive. The physical and occupational therapists were both wonderful individuals and did a great job working with him through a one-month stay.
It's great that they have new administration at this facility . The facility was recently bought out by a new owner. Everyone is extremely friendly and they're doing a lot of renovations. Im extremely impressed. Everyone is attentive. The rehab department is phenomenal and the nurses are top notch. I would highly recommend this facility
Do not be fooled by the old 5 star reviews, these were given under the previous owner. This place does not even deserve one star.We placed my 92-year-old grandmother here after she fell and was discharged from the hospital for rehabilitation. We were appalled at her treatment for the first 2 days she was there. She was left alone, not even water or tissues in her room and was still in her hospital gown that she arrived in. We were told that they couldn't do anything until the doctor assessed her which turned out to be on the 3rd day. From the beginning, we could tell that there was no communication between the staff, we would ask questions and no one ever could give us a straight answer and would go to check with someone else, who didn't know the answer either. When she first arrived in Orinda, she could walk with a walker, carry on a conversation, and tell us what she needed. We eventually hired a care-giver to be with her because we noticed she wasn't getting the care she needed. Then on a Monday, my mom noticed that my grandma was not doing well and having trouble speaking. She asked for the doctor to be notified and to see her immediately. For 6 days, we asked the nurses and we called the doctor and he never showed up. We asked the nurses and they would look at us like they were scared to say anything,I asked them numerous times to call 911 and they would tell me to wait for the doctor. Finally on the 6th day we called 911 ourselves and had her sent to emergency. When the paramedics arrived, the head nurse told them that my grandmother was fine and that all the reports stated so. The paramedics even told me that she was not responding properly and something was wrong. It turns out after all the of testing at the hospital, that my grandmother had suffered a stroke and the doctor said it had probably been one week to 5 days ago. Exactly when we tried to get the doctor at Orinda Rehabilitation to see her. If they had responded when we asked them to and had taken to emergency, her condition may not have deteriorated as much as it has. When I went to Orinda Rehabilitation the next day to get my grandmother's belongings, (because she will never go back to this facility), I spoke with the head nurse, and she seemed to think my grandmother was fine according to her nurses reports.Basiclly, DO NOT TAKE YOUR LOVED ONE TO THIS FACILITY.
I planned to write a review at the beginning of this year and had I done so my rating would have been 5+ stars. I work in the Long Term Care industry and this facility came highly recommended, and I could not have asked for a cleaner, safer, more caring facility for my mom to go who needed rehabilitation services. The staff cared for her immensely and the owner David Cronin was great. We unfortunately had an unplanned situation arise, which had my mom in need of rehabilitation for a second time. We came back to this facility unquestionably, but are more than disappointed. We knew the facility was going to be sold, but we didn't know what a negative effect that would have. When my mom arrived for the second time, she was placed in a shared room with a dimentia patient who required a lot of attention (her prior stay had her in a private room and there had been no change in her insurance). The bed she was put in was broken and could not go up and down, so she was left with a bed that was just inches off the floor. The light above her bed also did not have a light bulb in it, so she was in the dark. When asked the next day if she could be moved to a private room like she was before, we were told yes but that it would be at a cost of an additional $125 per day. The figure was written on a piece of scratch paper, there was no proper bill of sale, and we were told that we had to pay the amount up front based on her estimated stay (which we didn't know) and that we would be refunded any overage. When asked why this was different than the last time, we were told that the fee had been waived for her prior stay but they could not do that again.I question the nurse to patient ratio as advertised on their website. It was true of my mom's prior stay under David Cronin, but definitely not so under the new ownership.I question their sanitary practices, as we bought my mom her own disposable adult wipes and bed pads as the facility no longer had them available and was using wash cloths. We had been pleased to see some of the same CNA's and LVN's from my mom's prior stay, but they no longer smiled and you could feel the tension. We were witness to at least one of them being reprimanded in front of patients by an administrator for talking too much about the nurse to patient ratio and lack of sanitary products. When it came time to discuss my mother's transition home, we were handed a printout of Hospital Beds and Wheel Chairs that we could purchase out of pocket. When I asked why this was not being coordinated through my mom's insurance, the double talk and run around was ridicules. It stressed our entire family out, but most especially my mom. By this time our intent was to get my mom home as soon as possible and to see about getting the proper equipment in place on our own, which is covered by her insurance (after multiple calls made by me to her insurance company, equipment supplier, and Dr. to find out). Suddenly I became the discharge nurse and doing the job that the facility should have been doing all along to the point of having my brother hire a transport service to bring my mom home.I'm appalled at how quickly this facility could go from so great to so bad. When it comes to the needs and the health of our elderly, there is no place for a big business mentality but unfortunately this looks to be the road they are going down. I am saddened for the CNA's and LVN's that we grew to love and am more than happy to write them letters of recommendation to go elsewhere and find a place where there talents are appreciated.Due to my line of work, I plan to have this facility reevaluated and will encourage the downgrade of their rating. This is not a place we will return to.
My mother was in this facility for 2 weeks. I realize these places work on a very small budget, but Orinda Rehab rooms are in bad shape, the food was not good (sandwitches for dinner - ham and cheese), and the head staff had no idea what was going on. They pretended too, but when pushed, they would stumble over themselfs and have to restate their words. The nurses were very loving and caring, can say nothing bad about them, only good. Catherine, Head of Nursing, was a mess. We could never trust her to give us the straight scoop. My mother was suppose to be there to receive rehabilitation, out of the 14 days, i believe she was only worked with twice. My wife actaully had to yell at them for not doing all the things they said they were going to do. This is definitely a bland, no thrills experiance. Not sure what i was expecting, but this definitely wasn't it. This is a 'not-for-profit' facility. I heard it was just sold. Let's pray the new owners take a little better care of the place.
I would not wish this place on my worst enemy! My 94 year old grandmother was placed here because there were no other beds available in our area. Which made visiting sometimes a little difficult. EVERYTIME WE WENT TO VISIT my grandmother was in someone else's clothes due to the fact that her belongings were "misplaced" Everything was gone, from her tops to her pants and shoes. We bought 15 pairs of socks and they were all gone in less than 2 weeks. This place is disgusting! The staff could care less about her or our concerns. PLEASE BEWARE OF THIS HORRIBLE FACILITY! It's the kind of place that families have nightmares about. Our lasting impression of this facility is nothing but REGRET.
