Employee Reviews for Communicare Health in Alexandria, Virginia
3.5 out of 5 stars. Based on 2 reviews
Employees who have worked for Communicare Health in the Alexandria, VA area have generally positive things to say about the company. They appreciate that it is privately owned and is effectively managed from both a clinical and operations standpoint. However, they have noted that there can be some micromanagement from corporate, and that the values of the company do not always match the people they hire. Additionally, the managers in some of the buildings can be rude and not team-oriented, and the buildings themselves can be lacking in terms of upkeep. On the plus side, the company offers competitive compensation and a good work-life balance. The only downside is that the breaks are quite short.Employee Reviews for Communicare Health

Overall Ratings
Mount Vernon Healthcare Center is a nursing home with a mixed assessment of ratings. Sadly, it has an underwhelming 2-star overall rating, placing it within the bottom 40% of facilities in respect to the overall rating and falling below the state average. Its health inspection rating is even lower at just a single star, landing it in the bottom 10% of facilities in terms of health inspection rating, also lower than the state average. Despite these shortcomings, the Mount Vernon Healthcare Center defies expectations with its impressive 5-star quality rating - the highest possible score. This places it among the top 20% of facilities in terms of quality rating, surpassing the state average.Staff Ratings
The Mount Vernon Healthcare Center is a nursing home, unfortunately, with a staffing rating of only 1-star, the lowest possible rating. It falls within the bottom 30% of facilities when it comes to nursing aid staffing hours, providing only 1.87 staffing hours per resident per day, which is less than the state average of 1.94 hours. However, in terms of LPN staffing hours, the home performs well, being in the top 30% of facilities. It provides 1.09 LPN staffing hours per resident per day, exceeding the state's average of 1.02. The facility, however, lags in RN staffing hours, ranking in the bottom 30% with only 0.38 hours per resident per day, falling short of the state's average of 0.6. In terms of licensed staffing hours and physical therapist staffing hours per resident per day, Mount Vernon Healthcare Center finds itself in the top half of facilities. It offers 1.46 hours of licensed staffing hours, albeit less than the state's average of 1.62, and 0.06 hours of physical therapist staffing, slightly less than the state's average of 0.08.Covid Data
The Mount Vernon Healthcare Center is a prominent nursing home with a commendable track record in the aspect of resident vaccination. The facility prides itself on being among the top 30% of nursing homes with the highest rates of residents up to date with the latest vaccinations, boasting a significant 84.5% rate. This figure stands remarkably higher than the state average of 61.9%, further emphasizing the facility's commitment to resident health. Contrarily, when it comes to the staff up to date with the latest vaccination rate, the nursing home finds itself in the bottom 10% of facilities. Despite the state average standing at 25.9%, the Mount Vernon Healthcare Center reports a staff vaccination rate of an alarming 0.0%, reflecting an area in need of urgent improvement.Quality Measures
The Mount Vernon Healthcare Center is a reputable nursing home known for its superior care, demonstrated by its five-star quality measure rating, the highest marking attainable. However, it garners mixed reviews when assessed on various parameters. The center ranks within the lower 40% of facilities concerning risk management, with 4.12% of its residents experiencing one or more falls with major injury, surpassing the state's average of 3.39%. Immunization coverage also lags, as only 95.64% of residents have received the flu vaccine, slightly above the state’s 94.02%, but still positioning the facility in the bottom 40%. Strikingly, the Mount Vernon home excels in nutritional management, securing a spot in the top 30% of facilities, with only 3.29% of residents witnessing excessive weight loss, considerably lower than the state average of 6.79%. Regrettably, the center lags in personal care as 21.1% of residents' need for daily activity assistance has escalated, landing them in the bottom 20% of facilities and beating the state's 17.23%. In addition, only 83.24% of residents have received the pneumococcal vaccine, less than the state average of 88.02%, rendering it in the bottom 20% of facilities for this parameter.Emergency and Hospitalization Quality Measures
The Mount Vernon Healthcare Center, a top-rated nursing home, is commendably in the upper 40% of facilities when it comes to hospitalizations and outpatient emergency department visits per 1000 days. With a rate of 1.47 hospitalizations, it falls below the state's average of 1.49. Moreover, its per 1000 day outpatient emergency department visit rate is 0.72, which is substantially less than the state average of 1.11. Significantly, the nursing home is also in the elite 30% of facilities regarding the percentage of short-stay residents who had outpatient emergency department visits. It reports a rate of 7.39%, which is pleasingly less than the state's 13.11%. Furthermore, in terms of the percentage of short-stay residents rehospitalized after a nursing home admission, Mount Vernon excels by being in the top 30% of facilities with a rate of 18.9%, below the state's percent of short stay residents rehospitalized after a nursing home admission which stands at 22.09%. This renowned healthcare center epitomizes high-quality caregiving.Healthcare Nearby

If you can avoid this facility, then do. We had few choices where to place my mother after a bad fall. She had been bedridden since her fall and was not able to reach any item on her side table. Every day we questioned our decision to keep her at Mount Vernon Healthcare Center. She became comfortable with her CNA and so we were fearful of upsetting her with change when it took so long for her to adjust initially. . Be aware that these issues are not due to the pandemic, this is the norm. This place has so many issues that are alarming. If you expect communication about your loved one, you may not have anyone answer your call. You would think that you might at least get a recording telling you that you have reached the facility. But this is not the case, the phone will ring at least 30 times and then you get hung up on. If you do get through, you may or may not get connected with a person. Often you need to leave a message if the inbox isn't full, and you may or may not get a phone call back even if you talk to a person and they need time to find out the answer to your situation. This includes the nurses. My mother passed away last week. We were not given any notice that her health had declined to such a point that she was possibly living her last days. We were fortunate that we set up an in-person visit with her (that almost got cancelled because they were doing construction - figure out a plan B, MV!) and found that he condition had dramatically changed since we saw her 2 weeks prior. She couldn't speak, eyes glazed over, couldn't hold a fork for her to have a piece of birthday cake. And NOONE let us know about the change. Remember, it's a pandemic. We can't get in to check on her. Even if it wasn't a pandemic, you would expect a call to be informed of a decline in health. By the way - don't get me started about how they handled the pandemic. She died two days later. We were able to see her after she passed to say good-bye. We were floored by the condition of her room. We discovered unopened mail from as far back as June. It's October. NOONE helped her opened mail that contained pictures and mementos intended to cheer her up and keep her engaged with family. In addition there were vases of completely dead flowers. SERIOUSLY, not one person could take the time to throw out dead flowers - even the social worker. How disgusting! Given that she couldn't hold a fork the day we saw her, we have serious doubts that anyone was taking the time to feed her. Given that there was an unopened toothbrush that we gave the facility, we have serious doubts that anyone was helping her brush her teeth. Given that there was unopened mail, we have serious doubts that anyone was engaging her to ease the feelings of isolation she most certainly was experiencing. Over the years we've had meetings where we have expressed our concerns. They nod their heads and say "you're right", we should be better. We have even complained to the co-operate office, but nothing ever changed. Bottom line - this place is a living nightmare. Check the dates on any good reviews.
After breaking my patella (knee cap) in 2 places, I had surgery and went to Mt Vernon Healthcare for rehab. Do not confuse this with Mt Vernon Hospital as I did! This place takes sub-acute patients (unable to sustain 3 hrs of PT). Mt. Vernon Hospital/Rehab only takes acute patients. The good: The nurses and CNAs for the most part were extremely helpful, and compassionate. Because of the limited staff and emergencies, they were spread thin. The shining star nurse was MohamedAli and he juggled many things during his shifts, always with efficiency, a kind word and a big smile. The cleaning staff did an ok job of cleaning and emptying trash. The bad: it's in dire need of renovations! It is worn and shabby. The call button and controls for the bed were constantly falling on the floor from the bed as there was no place to put them. Fortunately, my friend was able to jerryrig a cord to the bed-stand and I was able to retrieve them from the floor by using his cord as a fishing pole. It was impossible to cut the light off or on above the bed as you couldn't reach the cord behind the bed. My friend pinned a clothes pin to the light chain and attached to the sheet. The closet door against the wall next to the bed only opened from left to right making it impossible for me to get my clothes. The doors could have been easily been reversed for easy access but I had friends helping me. The food was disgusting! My family brought in food and I kept fruit and yogurt in a cooler. The ugly re PT 1: modern PT room within the building. Staff pleasant. During my stay, I had a one week check up with surgeon. I was taken out of one brace and put in a high end ($650) and told never remove this brace. I asked if PT would know this and dr. replied "if they don't know, they shouldn't be physical therapists." According to my script, only PT could unlock the brace to move my knee gradually. The PT removed the brace and clueless as to how to put it back on. When I left with her, it fell down my leg and knee no longer straight. When my friend arrived, he couldn't believe what happened. He talked immediately to her supervisor to no avail. This happened the day before I was leaving and fortunately I had inhomec PT the next day and he fixed it which took a half hour. The ugly No. 2 problem with PT: I was told a PT session was ordered for the weekend but that never happened so a weekend wasted. The ugly No 3 problem with PT: A PT came in my room at night and said the front desk said he should stop by and check on me. I never got out of bed and he spent a few minutes and left. When I mentioned this the next day, I was told that was a PT session, thus charged!!The uglier re prescriptions: I was sent home with two controlled substance prescriptions. The pharmacy said they could not fill a copy of a prescription for a controlled substance. Friend goes back to Mt Vernon and they found a doctor who wrote out these prescriptions. Back to pharmacy. This was not acceptable because his DEA ID did not match his name. This dr. must have gotten his degree from a correspondence course. I was unable to get these drugs and in horrendous pain that evening. Next day friend returned and talked to Administrator who found a doctor who knew how to write prescriptions and stamped with her DEA ID. BOTTOM LINE: The 2 stars are for the dedicated nurses and CNA's. For the rest of this place and staff a big "0". This is long winded, but I took the time to write it, in the event it spares one of your family members or friends from selecting this facility.

On Friday my father in law was sent to mount Vernon health center, the place came well recommened to usWell sat he was ready to be helped back to bed and the nurse told him she dont understand him ,well if you dont you get someone that does ,just from the day and a half from what I see I would not recommend them .so my wife and I are going to look about taking him out and bring him home then fine people to help with his speech and helping him get strong .I rate them one star
My mother has been in this facility for 2.5 years and approximately a year ago she obtained additional insurance to offset costs (so she thought). However, after almost a year she recognized that the facility was indeed in network with one of her insurance providers, so she called and was told that the facility needed to submit claims to them so they could present payment. Only two claims were filed during 2018 and they were denied by the insurance company simply because they were submitted late. However, after the denial in November, no further were filed until June 13, 14 and July 24, (month 6 and month 7 of 2019) which were all listed as Room and Board ($24,000 each which is incorrect). I have been on the phone with the insurance company as recently as today and they note that they spoke with Susan in the business office and they requested that she send the claims to Medicaid and she declined to do so and even refused to take the number for the insurance company's provider services to resolve the issue. I have no issue with the insurance company denying a claim, but I do have an issue with NO CLAIM being filed with ALL of the insurance companies involved. I am at a loss as to why the facility have yet to file a claim with Medicaid at all. I have called several times and left messages for Susan as well as Erin Smith and nobody has called me back. Yolanda in the business office was very rude to me today, saying after I explained the situation (with attitude) "I have nothing to do with it, but I will pass the information along" then fabricated something that I didn't say. But the real issue came when I began to go through all my mom's 5 claims filed this year by the facility and found that on one claim there were 39 line entries for ONE DATE with the same description, which was really strange to me but it seems to be customary because each claim lists several line items with ONE DATE and the same description with different fees. I just feel like elderly people are being treated unfairly merely because they don't necessarily know any better and something has to be done about it. I mean who gets to decide who to file claims with and who not to. I am willing to bet they are doing it to other patients as well. This is so crazy.......Oh one last thing, the insurance company notes that my mother's MAXIMUM out of pocket for the YEAR should be the exact amount she pays monthly. People if you are going to place your parents in a facility please make sure you keep up on the insurance and bills to be sure everything is in the best interest of your parents. I will be moving my mother as soon as possible!

I recently had a loved one in the facility and am very pleased. This facility is clean, the staff friendly and the food looked good. I felt safe leaving my loved one there.During the original tour I saw the gym where physical therapy was held and was very impressed. The actual patient rooms are a bit small but the hallways are open and airy...I like that and there seemed to be alot of activity so being in the room all day wouldnt be necessary.I was able to visit at anytime and called regularly. The staff were helpful and the care was good.
Lengthy but READ.......So day one of my mothers physical rehab they tried giving her a blood thinner shot UNPRESCRIBED lol while she is still recovering from leg amputation and has open wound these ppl are idiots. Came in the next day to find this place is straight out of the late 60's early 70's with decor and technology. The beds are so old they have been paid for since 1978 I bet and the only modern touch is a flat screen the size of a laptop screen 15 to 17 in tops. Been here everyday and every day they keep trying to give her blood thinners at night time. No one has even read her chart to know she has diaper rash and needs treated every day with a zinc medicine NOT ONE TREATMENT GIVEN. To add insult to injury my mom a double amputy they try to encourage her to use her diaper which is going to make her rash worse when the physical therapy part of her stay calls for them to help her to learn to move to and from a potty chair HINTS NOT DOING THEIR JOBS. if you read the owners response to the other 1 star review my mother being a massive fall risk WITH a yellow fall risk band on has no bed rails no rubber mat nothing the owner is full of it. The management staff do well at belittling and down playing serious concerns especially Letty she is a "Manager". 50% of the food is rather questionable and my mothers roommate whom is diabetic they keep trying to give her things with sugar SMH. As a Fairfax county paramedic I understand malpractice and this place is itching for a case lol. I only pray mother survives this place looks like I have to take off to be hear everyday to ensure her safety SMH its a shame I can't trust this place to do thier jobs. Don't come here even though reviews are good, come look for you self first before sending your loved one here. The other one star review she is not to far off of what I'm witnessing. Idk what these ppl are doing with their money but it sure isn't going in to the Dated facility, Dated Equiptment, POORLY TRAINED RN'S AND CNA'S
Excellent facility with a very fine staff committed to providing very good patient care. The staff is remarkably stable given the industry norm. In addition to providing excellent rehabilitative therapy, the facility has an active schedule of activities for residents. Family member and patient concerns are taken seriously and addressed actively. The facility is always clean with a very fine maintenance staff. The food is very good and the dietary staff is excellent. The social work staff is extremely competent, accessible and kind. Having a family member at Mt. Vernon for over two years now, my husband and I have had a very good opportunity to observe and know the staff. We are very pleased and grateful for the excellent care our family member receives. As far as nursing and rehabilitative facilities go, this one is superlative!
Having worked in health care for quite a while, I'm always skeptical of nursing and rehabilitation facilities, but Mount Vernon Nursing and Rehab Center really won me over! I needed to find a place for my mom to recover from a tough surgery, and they were, by far, the best. Everyone I spoke with on the phone was pleasant and accommodating. And then when I visited, I was so impressed with the professionalism and compassion of the staff. It was easy to see why they received the top rating from Medicare. Mom is back on her feet now, and the whole family is incredibly grateful for MVNRC!
You can tell a lot about a nursing facility by the way the staff looks and acts, and every single person I encountered at Mount Vernon Nursing and Rehab Center during my rehabilitation was kind, compassionate and friendly. In fact, everything about MVNRC is just a few notches above what you probably expect from a typical facility. It's clean, comfortable and quiet. Plus the meals are outstanding! By the time I was able to go home again, I wasn't sure I wanted to leave! But seriously, if you are looking for the area's absolute best nursing and/or rehab facility, this is your only choice.
When there are visitors they sure do put on a good show. First of all, 80% of the staff there are great with the residents. The other 20% is questionable because I want to know why are some residents placed in the hallway to look at walls? If they're at fall risk try to take other precautionary measures like buying mats (specifically for falls) to be placed by the beds or RESPONDING TO CALL LIGHTS WITHIN SECONDS! NOT LONG-LONG MINUTES. AND THAT GOES FOR EVERYONE ON THE HEALTHCARE TEAM. STOP RUNNING YOUR MOUTH AND WORK TOGETHER AND DO NOT THINK YOU ARE BETTER THAN THE NEXT BECAUSE OF YOUR SALARY. HELP!The activities department also needs improvement. Especially the so called "activities director" The staff there does all the work with love and care while the director sits down on the computer doing who knows what and does nothing but judge others and does NOT know a thing about putting anything together or how to SPEAK to the residents. The only time you will see the director actually doing something is when there are guests or deadlines to be met LAST MINUTE or go sap up to the other departments. So the next time you go to a nice event sponsored by the activities department, make sure you thank the right people. The only thing I learned at Mount Vernon Rehab and Nursing Center is to research why and how do incompetent people get the jobs that they have.
