Employee Reviews for Five Star Senior Living in Richmond, Virginia
2.8 out of 5 stars. Based on 5 reviews
Overall, employees have mixed feelings about working for Five Star Senior Living in the Richmond, VA area. Many appreciate the excellent training and high expectations, as well as the flexibility with scheduling that allows them to attend school while working. However, employees also report a stiff culture, poor pay, and favoritism among management. Additionally, they note that the company only cares about “heads in beds” and often accepts people who need the care of a nursing home, which can set staff up for failure. Finally, some employees report that upper management does not know what they are doing, such as taking ingredients off the order guide that they would put on the menus.By clicking "Get Exact Costs", you consent to being contacted either by My Caring Plan or our third-party partners at the phone number and contact information provided, including through the use of an automated dialer system. Visiting two friends here many times, I have been appalled at the condition of not only the hallways but also the rooms. Overwhelming smell of stale urine on the hallway, in the carpet. Rooms are no better: untidy, with strong smell of urine, dirty bed pads reused instead of replaced, clothing not fresh. Patient televisions are left on.Front desk staff is pleasant. No admin or nursing available during any of my visits.I would urge anyone considering this private-pay facility to visit and walk the hallways before going. If you don't see patients out of their rooms this means patients are being put in their beds or chairs in rooms, in front of the TV. Smell the place...not at the main desk but on the halls where residents live. A smell of urine means that patients are having accidents and the floor is not being cleaned, or patients are not being cleaned or changed. There are far better facilities. I would not choose this one if you are looking for quality assisted living.
Having been a sane, mentally stable resident for over a year (late 2018 through early 2020) at Morningside in the West End I must say that my experience there was most disappointing and to a great extent distressing. Living at Morningside will drain away from you any zest or joy you have for living. Every resident deserves to be treated with kindness and respect which is not the case at Morningside. In fact, residents are generally treated as if they are naughty, mentally deficient children which is extremely insulting and degrading. The executive staff turns a deaf ear to concerns or complaints by residents though management insists there is an open door policy regarding resident's concerns but that is not the case. The activities are unappealing and therefore poorly attended. The dining room is understaffed with extremely slow service and the food is atrocious at best. There are other facilities that I have recently visited that offer a far superior retirement living experience. Please, when considering a retirement or assisted living facility for yourself or a loved one, try and make an informed, knowledgeable and caring decision and, if you do so, you most certainly will not choose Morningside in the West End.
I too was at the Thanksgiving Lunch and thought the staff did an excellent job. The patience, kindness and personal attention they show for their residents is far above anything I have ever seen. We were one of the last to be served and there was plenty of food. I learned later that over 25 more guests showed up than had RSVP'd and still everyone was welcomed. If 25 people showed up at my house unannounced for dinner, I don't think I would be as nice. That said -- those that did not bother to RSVP should be ashamed of yourself.
Yesterday Morning side held a Thanksgiving Appreciation meal for the residents. It was a disaster. No reservation was made for our family. Some of our family members had to eat out of bowls. No one came to refill drinks. No one was served dessert. No dessert at a Thanksgiving meal is unacceptable. If guests cannot adequately be accommodated, then they should not be invited. The services of an assisted living are paid for by the residents.Had we known the Thanksgiving meal was going to be presented substandard, we would have taken our family member out to lunch.
My sister and I showed up without an appointment to see the community and from the time that we walked in the front door until we left we felt welcomed. Morninside is the only community that we looked at for my parents and we will not look at any others. Rebecca's presentation and enthusiasm won us over , along with the delicious signature cookies that Chef Rachel made us.
Every time I visit my mother at Morningside, she's always hugging a staff member or they're loving on her. They really do seem to care about her and are very good with follow-through. In fact, when Mom was confused about where to put her used laundry, staff alerted me that her hamper wasn't full on wash days. Some people would have kept quiet and thought, "Less work for me," but when we figured out the dirty clothes had been going back into the drawers and closets with the clean ones, the lovely laundry lady took *ALL* of Mom's clothes to wash and make sure everything was clean.Prior to deciding on Morningside, we visited a number of different facilities, and we kept comparing them all to Morningside. It's small and cozy, and everybody seems to know everyone there. And it feels homey rather than institutional like some of the others we saw. It was definitely the right decision for us.
My mom has been a resident at Morningside since February and I cannot say enough good things about the staff. Putting mom into assisted living is a decision I dreaded, but she constantly tells me how much she loves it there and how good everyone is to her. Makes me feel so less guilty and I know she is happy, well fed and safe. The facility is clean, smells good and the staff go out of their way to see that mom has everything she needs. I am thankful every day that we chose Morningside.
My mother and stepfather were there for about 8 months. My stepfather was left alone when he cut the shower off as he needed help to get back to the bed. my mother needed to eat a heart healthy diet and was feed regular dietBe careful of this place keep an eye on for what is going on with your lived ones
My sister in law has been a resident for a year and we have been satisfied with the care she has been given. No one and no place is perfect but morningside comes close to it. A shout out to Barbara the receptionist who greets with enthusiasm and to Tyler Hollander the chef and his staff for putting on an 80th birthday celebration with gluten free pies and all that's needed to make the party perfect. Thank you to all who work hard to make my sister in law comfortable.
I have been a resident at Morningside in The West End for only a couple of weeks and I am VERY happy. All of the staff and other residents are nice and helpful and always smiling.Morningside in The West End has a Jewel in Barbara at Front Desk. She is wonderful. I love the food in the short time that I have been at Morningside I have gained 2 lbs with Chef Tyler wonderful cooking. Gloria my server is always pleasant, smiling and makes sure I have everything I need.My nurse Michelle.... I could not ask for a better nurse. The community is always clean and I can not tell you how happy I am to be at Morningside. There is a lot to do with activities from Entertainment to church services. I was not able to attend church much while at home so I have really enjoyed the services.
Both my parents were residents for over two years and received excellent care. The facility has a caring staff, the rooms are well maintained and both considered this home. Be clear, this is not a nursing home with hospital like facilities and it's not a retirement village with dancing til 10. It's a wonderful facilities for adult who need help caring for themselves.
