To pay homage to the rich musical legacy of the property, live and recorded music will be an integral part of the community, and selected memorabilia from the Cash/Carter family will be on display.
Sage Hill Maybelle Carter has a storied heritage, with deep connections to the surrounding community and country music history. Set on the former estate of country music legend “Mother” Maybelle Carter, the senior living community was built in her honor by her daughter June Carter, and son-in-law Johnny Cash.
Adjacent to Sage Hill Maybelle Carter is the Smith-Carter House, a 1925-built two-story, four-bedroom farmhouse, that was home to June Carter and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Patsy Cline, Elvis Presley and Marty Stuart were among the frequent visitors that stayed there.
Family matriarch “Mother” Maybelle Carter, who developed the transformative “Carter Scratch” guitar picking style, moved here with husband Ezra in 1971, and remained here until her death in 1978. She was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1970.
