UPDATE:Horrific, realized what the management is really like during the Covid shutdown. Most employees have been swapped out and they've let go of people who are willing to break their back for the company. Thankfully, others have been able to make ends meet by focusing elsewhere in this industry. I hope to have my mind changed.
I do not recommend Hawthorne Gardens for your loved ones. The Executive Director is condescending to both staff and families. There is a staffing problem in Oregon and this place is not well staffed. Sometimes there are just two staff members for 27 residents on the memory care floor. Despite the acknowledgement from management that there is a staffing problem, they continue to move in new residents. The residents' rooms smell of days old urine. Staff is not supported by management. Despite efforts to support management, they continue to degrade the staff which leads to a high turnover rate and an unhappy staff. There are often no activities because the activities director is pulled away to do caregiving. Residents sit around and watch TV all day with nothing to do. The staff are good people but they are overworked and often have to pull double shifts.
This place has been in trouble for the last two years. Families are talking to each other and continuing to transfer their elders (residents) to other facilities. It will take a long time for this place to clean-up its act, so keep that in mind. Do not believe the 4 and 5 star reviews which are written by staff, whose names I recognize. My parent was neglected, threatened, starved, et cetera. It took my installing a remote surveillance camera in his private room to determine these horrible truths. I won't let my father down again.
Hawthorne gardens is about the worse place I have ever worked. The management is disrespectful to there employee, maybe that's way they are always losing good employee. They are always short staffed in there memory care and some of the residents eat breakfast due to them being short staffed.
I can only speak to the Assisted Living area. The food has become much better, with several choices and an obvious focus on improving the quality with more fresh foods and items cooked from scratch. I've observed that the current care staff members genuinely care about the residents. It's challenging work and takes a special person to do it well. I also appreciate the small size of the community and the quiet residential neighborhood. My mother has lived there for 7 years and tells me she is very content, which makes me happy.
When I saw these 5-star reviews I had to laugh because they were all done by former employees! My mother is currently residing on the memory care floor and giving them 1 star is a stretch. The facility is not clean, the food is served cold and unappealing, the basic needs of the residents are not being met.Luckily we have family that are in daily to see to my mother. The staff is not trained in basic care of dementia pateints. They are barely paid minimum wage so the turnover is constant. They only care when they see you coming in for a visit, then they run and act like they are doing something. Lots of smoking on the deck and talking on their phones. The pretty pictures you see are for the assisted living floor - not the memory care floor.
These reviews are inaccurate. Hawthorne Gardens has a problem. The turnover rate with staff is ridiculous. The food is mediocre to poor. The Memory Care floor is sad and ill serviced. The facility snaps to when there are visitors, but the day to day operation - especially under the new ownership is sorely lacking. My loved one has been there over two years the decline in care is maddening.
This was the best place I ever worked... they really care about their employees and they really care about the residence I am so sad that I had to quit due to my mom getting diagnosed with cancer :-( the best job They go above and beyond for the residence and the employees!!
I love working at Hawthorne Gardens! We are more than a community and much like a family. I have worked here for 15 months and can say it is one of the most loving, caring, kind environments I have ever had the pleasure of being employed in. The residents who live in the community, love it! Many of which have been here for many years. They enjoy being able to communicate freely with managers about health concerns and other issues that may arise. One of my favorite things about Hawthorne Gardens is the caring, knowledgeable staff. They are always yearning to learn more and know more information about the population that we serve. The management company, Artegan, is also responsive, kind, and around. This is the first company where the management company is so involved and acutely aware of what is going on. And it is nice!
