From my mother, who lived there for about 10 months, "I resided at Harmony West Shore in Mechanicsburg, Pa. I witnessed firsthand the abuse some of the residents had to endure. A lot of elderly people were afraid of a man who was allowed to mistreat others profusely. This said person helped immensely with running and maintaining the retirement home. The organization was grossly short staffed. He was permitted to do these infractions because it allowed them to not hire the needed staff. Many residents, including myself, were afraid to speak up in their defense because we were warned of the retribution that would occur if we spoke up for our rights. Yes. I spoke up for myself and saw the consequences for doing so. The meals were barely adequate, to say the least. We were way overcharged per meal. Many times, I would eat there and need to go back to my apartment and eat more to sustain me. I was told that as part of my contract, my room would be cleaned weekly. Quite often, this didn't occur. I had to clean my apartment myself. I saw a woman in the parking lot twice who was in a wheelchair unattended and obviously had dementia. She was very scared. I pushed her chair myself to the lobby during the afternoon on 2 separate occasions. I wondered how she was able to get past the front desk, which is supposed to be attended by staff. There is a highway near to the facility. I wondered what would have happened if I hadn't been there for her. Although I don't believe the 2 times I found her were isolated cases. If you want to ensure good health, safety, and a balanced diet, I strongly recommend that you don't live here. The salesperson tells people what they want to hear so they can make a sale. I was "just a name and a paycheck" after I signed the lease.
