It's my understanding that my grandmother stayed here in the hospice program before she passed away. When I got the news, I reached out hoping to talk to her. That said, the nurse denied me the right to know how she was doing because I was not on the primary contacts. I was also told that she would call me back. Rather, she brushed me off which I felt was not only very rude but very unprofessional. I felt like I was denied the right to have a proper goodbye with my grandmother. They also did not have the courtesy to ask whether I wanted to be placed as primary contact. People have no common sense and empathy anymore for how they act or treat others.
Visited my loved one here a few times and paid attention to the workers while I was there. I could tell that this is one of those places that have bad employees that scare all of the good ones away. I saw a few aides/nurses make a very nice, sweet aide do all the work for them, when the work they made her do was obviously a two person job, and I saw this every time I visited. I even saw a few aides/nurses being rude and even rough with some of the residents. Even after being informed, the supervisors did absolutely nothing. This place needs a thorough look-over. Oh, and that sweet aide has since left.
My husband was a resident at Good Shepherd for a little more than three years, starting out in their Ace Rehab Unit, then moving to Long Term Care. Good Shepherd immediately felt like "home" to both my husband and myself. Even our children and grandchildren felt that way as they visited often. Moving to a Long Term Care facility is never anyone's BIG DESIRE in life, but my husband quickly came to realize it was where he needed to be and felt safe and secure at Good Shepherd right away. The nursing staff, rehab staff, food service folks, cleaning folks...all became friends to both my husband and myself. I wheeled him each Sunday to the Chapel for wonderful worship services where we quickly met new "family" members and grew close to the Good Shepherd Pastor/Chaplain. I have continued to serve Good Shepherd in many ways since my husband's death as a way of "giving back" to these wonderful care givers and the other dear residents I grew to deeply care about. THANK YOU, Good Shepherd, for the loving care you provide to all your residents at a time they so deeply need it!
I cannot say enough about the Good Shepherd Community overall! My mother-in-law and father-in-law started in apartments for a year and then moved to the long-term care. They've been married for 60 years and just want, I would argue NEED, to be together. The staff recognized the importance of this and accepted them both into the nursing home at the same time. There weren't any double rooms available so they gave my father-in-law the single and my mother-in-law is sharing a double with another resident (across the hall) already there. They spend all of their time together in my father-in-law's single room and are able to live a life TOGETHER which is all they want. The staff there TRULY loves them and there's nothing more we could ask for. It is so evident how everyone treats them with respect and love. And ultimately their precious love as a couple is being honored. It brings me to tears to see how sweet they are at 87 and 89 years old and huge props to all the staff for honoring them and their love.
I have had two short stays a couple years apart at the ACE Rehab at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home. One for a knee replacement and one after a heart surgery. Both times I've had a wonderful experience! The facility is very nice, the staff were professional, friendly and very helpful and the therapists were top notch. They all helped me recuperate and get home quickly. I also had their Good Shepherd Home Care services while staying with my daughter and they were excellent as well. I highly recommend all of their services!
I've been working at the memory cottages for over 1 yr and I love my job and the facility I work for the team I'm on to the bosses above me and the residents I help care for !! This has been one of my favorite places to work for ! I would recommend this place to friends and family to stay or work at !!
AVOID this place. My mother and father chose this place because it is "Lutheran". I respect that. The first couple of years my dad had good cognitive abilities. Here's the rest of the story: My dad was there several years ago. First clue it is not a good place: The admin offices are behind glass doors. The air is fresh and there is no stale urine odor there. The admin staff tends to stay behind those closed doors. My dad was non-ambulatory. His care declined from good to VERY sub-par. Food on his face almost constantly. Toothpaste around his mouth. Once he had no drinking water for 5 of 6 days. The reason: "water volunteer was sick". One night this "NON-Ambulatory" man mysteriously was able to go over the bed rail and end up on the floor. We got blank stares and speculative answers from staff. For what my parents were paying out of pocked he could have been in a luxury hotel with room service. I spoke to the head of nursing and the director, excuses were made, heads nodded, appropriately concerned and then... no change. He was subject to bladder infections. Several times, by the time staff took action he was feverish and incoherent. When we began moving his things, during a hospitalization, we got a LOT of attention then. The staff was "concerned" about what we had to say. I would not kennel a dog at Good Shepherd in Sauk Rapids, Mn.My dad never recovered after that last hospitalization. He passed a short time later at an excellent facility (see Talahi Nursing Home)If my mother had not gone there daily during his stay, he would have declined and died much quicker. Since my dad could not advocate for himself toward the end it appeared that he got put at the last of the list for his daily cares and needs. Again, my mother was there daily and took care of those needs.
I am a cook here, and I can definitely say that this place is top notch! The staff is very courteous, and treat you like family! Constant events and activities (especially Bingo, a crowd favorite!) and numerous church services, Good Shepherd is the place to bring your loved one for assisted living :)
Good Shepered would be a better place to work if the employees were not "out to get you". There is no exceptions to any rule even if it is to the benifit to other employees or residents. The turn over rate is very high here, and good employees are lost due to having absolutely no leeway. Best Wishes if you choose to be employed here. If you work the overnight shift there will be a large resident to emoloyee ratio at times it is overwhelming, and limited approved " filling time between rounds or call lights" activities. If you are enticed by bounus that are offered for picking up shifts, be sure that you are a nurse, the bonus for aides is little. Be informed.
Good Shepherd is a top notch facility. My mother has been a resident 3 times over the past few years for physical and occupational rehab. She LOVED it there. The staff was awesome and so professional, helpful and caring. It’s a beautiful facility with so much to offer from the chapel, store, library, even a movie theater and more! Bless all your hearts for all you are doing through these very troubled and scary times in order to keep all the residents safe and healthy. You are all truly special people! Be safe and stay healthy. Sincerely, Gloria Danielson
Our mom was there and loved the wonderful coffee shop, loved Janette and all those wonderful helpers, she received great care and also loved how nice it was decorated, our whole family enjoyed visiting mom and lunching at the Northern Delights Store, our mom Anita Gille totally enjoyed the store.

A community nursing home where my sister resided for several years with extreme dementia. The caregivers were kind, caring and well versed in their particular positions. Her end-of-life care was administered by a wonderful hospice group. i am glad she was able spend her last years at this facility.
