Alexandria Memory Care Community Description

Nestled in the heart of Old Town Alexandria, a mere stone's throw from King Street lies Silverado Alexandria - offering more than just assisted living. A haven of solace for those with memory impairments, this community is devoted to enhancing the lives of its residents. At Silverado, we firmly believe that dignity and respect are the building blocks for a meaningful life filled with joy. Nothing could be more rewarding to us than the joyous grin of a satisfied patient, the gratefulness from an eased family member or the energetic hug of an active resident. At Silverado, our commitment to compassion is an unbreakable bond that links every member of the family. It's this same care and consideration that guides us in all we do.

Memory Care
When living at home is no longer an option for a loved one, it's not the end of their days in familiar surroundings - rather, it signals that they're ready to find a new place to call home. Silverado's commitment to addressing the requirements of those with memory-related issues demonstrates that we offer more than just assisted living - We provide care and comfort. By honing our expertise in memory care and dementia care, we are able to provide for those whose needs have surpassed what more traditional senior living communities can offer.

Respite Care
Caregivers can find a much-needed break from their responsibilities with respite care, which offers temporary assistance for loved ones in an enjoyable and secure setting - thus avoiding the dreaded burnout. Caring for a cherished family member can bring with it many pressures, which often results in the exhaustion of those who provide care. Time to take a break and explore the world, run errands or even catch up on some ZZZs can be essential for avoiding burnout, staying fit & healthy and continuing to provide top-notch care.

When it was evident it was time to find a place where my sister could get quality, loving care, her 2 daughters found the “perfect” place! We can all rest assured she is very well taken care of and a big plus is we can see pictures of my sister Judy Waller and all the activities Silverado provides is a real bonus. I have yet to be able to visit but we 4 siblings all sleep better now knowing her safety is covered 100%. Thank you all for the compassion and care you show to all your residents.

Before COVID, I was incredibly impressed by Silverado staff nationwide. Their passion, dedication and love is obvious the second you walk through the door of any Silverado Community. It’s part of the company culture and DNA. Since COVID, I have come to realize that each and ever one of you are heroes! Hang in there and keep up the good fight. This too shall pass. #CareNotCovid, #SilveradoAlexandria

I can not say enough good things about Silverado Alexandria. If you are looking for memory care for a loved one I do not feel there is a better place. Yes, it is expensive. But the care my mother receives is priceless. Mother has only been a resident since June.  5 months, but is addressed by name by all of the staff.  There are activities almost hourly on a daily basis. Meals are served on real dishes, in a pleasing communal environment. Every little detail is addressed. The communication is frequent. Our families input is taken into consideration at all times. Mom is safe, comfortable and as happy as Alzheimer's allows. The staff has actually worked with us on tools to help address when Mothers confusion becomes worrisome for her. Mother is cared for physically, mentally and emotionally. There is nothing more I could ask for. The staff has done what my sister and I tried for so long to do, without the degree of expertise they have.

My father has been at Silverado since Jan 2020.  Simply put, Silverado is the best. Not all memory care is the same at all. Other places that have combined assisted living & memory care don't prioritize the kinds of things people living with dementia need. Silverado has a very progressive philosophy. They believe specialized activities can dramatically improve the lives of people with dementia.  Trivia, game nights, discussion groups, scenic rides, etc. The residents and nurses and staff treat residents with care and respect and dignity.Katie, Melissa, Corie and the team are fantastic.  They are very transparent and they communicate A LOT.  This isn't the place where you only get a call when there's bad news.  I get texts about things my dad did, pictures, a video of my dad dancing with the performers they bring in for Happy hours several times a week.During the pandemic Silverado has been great. My dad got Covid, and it was a scary time. But the team took care of him, and I got updates 3 times a day. The nurses there were fantastic.  The staff also understood we needed to see our loved ones during the pandemic.  They worked hard to get us back to visiting in person much earlier than any other facilities around. Finally, there's an amazing community of families at Silverado.  There are monthly support groups for families; seminars by caregivers about memory care; dinners where families of residents can get together to talk. Sometimes it helps to know there's someone who knows what you're going thru ...

Unfortunately I can no longer recommend Silverado.  My family member became infected with Covid-19 and subsequently died.  Silverado is actively concealing the extent of the infection and the number of deaths of residents in their care.  Families deserve to know the truth.  Silverado is choosing to protect its profit margins rather than our family members.  Look elsewhere if you want peace of mind for your loved ones.

Look no further ... we've been there, done that -- this place is the real deal! For almost three years we cared for both parents with Dementia in our home - we  had caregivers from big agencies, small agencies, independents and even our own dependents to help us. One year after my Mom passed away, we made the painful choice of moving my step-Dad into an assisted living/memory care community - and after visiting many different places ...well, we made the wrong choice! Go figure. We should've chosen Silverado... the great news is that he's there now!In December, 2019 we moved Tom from "Wrong Choice" Assisted Living Community to "Best Thing That Ever Happened" Silverado Memory Care after watching his physical and mental health spiral downward. When Tom arrived at Silverado he was catatonic, unresponsive, wheelchair bound and fed by hand; we weren't sure he would make it to the New Year. Who knew we were about to witness a Christmas miracle ... within ONE month - actually ONE week - Tom was back to his 'old self' -- walking, eating, laughing, thinking, solving, choosing, dancing, singing, engaging -- and oh ..even flirting {sigh} :) - Amazing how authentic care, true compassion and providing dignity and purpose can literally breathe life back into a soul. Grateful for all the angels at Silverado Alexandria Memory Care Community!

I tried everything to keep my wife at home. Despite having two shifts of caregivers in the house and the use of sedatives, I realized two things:  The first was I could not keep her safe.  She constantly found ways to slip out of the house and wander.   My answer, for a time, was to give her more drugs.  But one day I looked at her and realized we were robbing her of her quality of life with this approach.  She was getting very little social interaction.  We only left the house once or twice a week for groceries and date night at the diner.  So, I started touring Memory care and Assisted living communities.I chose Silverado primarily because I felt a different vibe when I toured the community.  I decided I wanted a Memory Care community only because I wanted my wife to be in a place where Memory Care was the primary focus.  I didn't like the feeling of the Assisted Living communities that also had a locked floor, maybe in the basement, where they kept the residents living with memory loss.  As I toured more communities, I realized one thing that set Silverado apart was the staff.   Everyone in the community cared about the residents.  Everyone from the Director to the caregivers was very interested to learn about my wife, our family and the strong bonds that held us together.   The community is new and nice with bright rooms with attractive furniture, but it was truly the staff that made me feel comfortable. It truly is a community almost like a large extended family.  Every family knows every other family.    Family members are welcome 24 hours a day.  Many families have their meals together in the dining room and for medium to larger gatherings there is a private dining room, which we have used several times.  Because of this family atmosphere, everyone looks in on and asks how each other's family member is doing.   So, if you cannot visit for a period of time you know that other family members will say hello and check in on your loved on.  Silverado nourishes this type of culture.  Another important fact is every associate is trained in dementia care.   I have seen the Building Engineer walking through the community with a resident trying to help him find something.  Everyone here cares.  Also, it is apparent that all the staff know a lot about every resident.  If someone likes to sit in the same chair every day, or drink a favorite beverage, or if someone likes to help out in an office or arrange flowers all the staff know this and go out of their way to try to incorporate these details into the resident's daily life.  Are there any hiccups? A few as this is a new community.  But the staff are open to feedback and responsive to suggestions.   After ten weeks at Silverado, my wife is doing much better than she was at home.  She has made friends with several residents and with many of the staff members.  We have been able to remove 100% of her sedating medications.  She has no desire to wander outside anymore.  When we leave the community and return, she is eager to check in with all her friends and staff members.  She truly sees Silverado as her home and she smiles every day, which is something I haven't seen in years. If you are looking for a community where people really care and where family members feel welcome and a valuable part of the community, Silverado is a great choice and some place you must visit.

The staff at Silverado are without exception talented, empathetic, caring and kind. They get to know all of the residents personally and work to design activities that will appeal to each and every resident. We moved my mom in during COVID and were impressed with the protocol - keeping everyone safe while also helping my mom adjust to her new environment and friends. There are tons of activities - from art to flower arranging to exercise and music, and we always feel informed about and involved in her care and health. I highly recommend Silverado without reservation.

So many wonderful things about this facility! As difficult as COVID has been, I am so grateful that my dad was at Silverado. They updated us on what was happening and provided scheduled contact with our dad. Silverado Memory Care Community is a top quality organization. Silverado associates treat the residents with respect, consideration, and compassion. They go out of their way to ensure that the residents are dressed well, that they have the freedom to move about, while also paying close attention. They do not talk down to the residents or speak about them in the third person while they are present. It is a loving environment in which residents feel at home, not institutionalized. When we were doing our research we were impressed with the professionalism and compassion shown by the people we interviewed. The staff there is hands-on and involved with residents, a tone set at the very top.

Both of our parents live at Silverado Alexandria and we are grateful that they are cared for there with respect and good humor/patience and diligence. We live not too far away and love coming for an afternoon visit or attending an event with all of the community. The place is so very welcoming, my parents are smiling when we arrive. Special points of its unique character: they have a family dining room where you can plan a meal with your family that is separate, quiet and beautifully set up; the staff is always on top of things like what medications are being administered and when, any negative reactions or issues; the resident engagement work is tireless--it's not just a write up on a brochure, they truly get the residents out and about and throw great parties for them, lots of live music is featured and that always brings my parents great joy; my parents physical well being is better than it was when they lived on their own--Silverado connects me with dentists and PTs, etc, seamlessly so that I can make sure my folks' quality of life is as high as is possible. Our lives would be so much less content without Silverado, it's as simple as that.

My mother has asked me to share the following:Six months ago, my husband’s dementia required more care than I could provide at our home in Florida. I knew the time had come to relocate to Northern VA to be closer to our daughter and find a facility to provide my husband with the round-the-clock care he needed. While the move to Silverado and the work leading up to it felt daunting at times, the staff made it as easy and seamless as possible for my husband, my daughter, and me. We could not have wished for a smoother transition.Silverado is clean and bright, and looks more like a club or hotel than what you might envision for a memory care center. Residents are allowed to move from one floor to another for activities and events, as opposed to being restricted to a certain space or floor. The fact that the entire building is dedicated to memory care makes this possible. The meals are balanced, flavorful and plentiful, as are snacks and special treats. My husband’s room is clean and well maintained, regardless of when I stop by to visit. Families and approved guests are welcome and encouraged to visit at any time and, if desired, join our loved ones for meals.Other than when he is sleeping, my husband is rarely in his room. Instead, his days are filled with art, live music, bus rides, museum visits, and engaging in activities with fellow residents. The staff (all of whom are trained in dementia care) know my husband’s name, his interests, his likes and dislikes, and the best ways to engage him. Everyone on staff is gentle and kind and treats him with dignity and respect. He has bonded with his caregivers and enjoys spending time with them each day.As a result, my daughter and I have seen my husband grow physically stronger and much more social than he had been at home, where his days were spent watching television and napping. His balance has improved from physical therapy and exercise sessions. His appearance has also improved, and he is bathed, shaved, and presentable, as opposed to in his pajamas all day. He is happy and content, cooperative, and enjoying many activities and programs that he had never done prior to the onset of dementia. The transformation has been amazing. The Silverado team and community are like one big family. We have found everyone, regardless of job title or responsibility, to be accommodating, dedicated, and happy to help us navigate this journey. Educational and social programs for families are informative and serve to remind us that we’re all in this together. As the community continues to grow, the positive energy is palpable. If you are searching for a memory care facility for a loved one, we urge you to put Silverado Alexandria at the top of your list. Tour the facility. Talk with the staff. Spend time with the residents and meet their families. Silverado Alexandria will challenge your assumptions about what memory care can be.

Melissa, Corie, Katie, Jane and many others at Silverado Alexandria have helped our family through one of the most traumatic periods we have ever experienced. Both parents were diagnosed with dementia within months of each other last fall; the next 7 mos was truly challenging for everyone. Our parents were separated for months during that time, each living on their own for the first time in nearly 65 years of marriage and basically unaware of the other's situation. Mom and Dad are together at Silverado since late March, have settled in and both are doing so much better than we expected after what they've been through. The leadership team and staff have consistently gone out of their way to apply creative and loving solutions for our parents and US! Thank you for trying every day to make an important difference.

The staff, Jane, Corie and the nurses and CNA have been wonderful and caring during a uniquely difficult time with our family and the other families of the residents. I can not explain in words how kind, patient and knowing the staff are from the maintenance team, receptionists, nurses, activities coordinators and CNAs. I would encourage anyone wondering what to do to go for a visit and see it. I looked at 17 places in DC and Northern Va and by far this was the best and right decision. Understanding memory issues and how they impact the resident, other residents and the family is a gift each staff person provides. I have learned so much. My father is in a beautiful single room adjacent to lovely well decorated common areas that provide a hotel feel. Everything is fresh with laundry every day, and cleaning every day. Nothing compared.

I can’t say enough good things about Silverado. After visiting several other facilities, I happened to hear that there was an open house at Silverado. As soon as I entered the building I realized that this was an entirely different kind of place. It is a community of residents and a staff of people that treat everyone as family. There are unique touches that are designed to help those with memory issues. One that really touched me was that each room has a small cabinet on the wall outside the door. In it, the resident can put pictures or mementos that not only serve to share part of their life with others, but also helps them easily recognize their room. My mother has gotten lots of comments on her picture of a bear at her house in the mountains. It has sparked many conversations. After talking with several administrators, I knew I wanted my mother here. They all made me feel instantly that they understood the needs of a person with dementia and also the needs of the family members.I struggled with moving my mother from her home and she didn’t want to leave it. She was very angry at me for the first couple of weeks that she was at Silverado. I visited her often and often left in tears. I couldn’t have made it through her transition without the support of the all the wonderful administrators, nurses, and staff. They assured me that she would settle into her new surroundings and she has. She is thriving and is enjoying the companionship of the other residents as well as the activities that are planned daily. She has gone on several scenic rides around the area, including seeing the cherry blossoms in bloom and has gone to eat at several new restaurants.Keeping families informed on what is going on is an important aspect of Silverado. A monthly calendar of events is sent out via email to all families. Pictures are taken regularly by the staff and those too are posted for viewing by the families. Every time that my mother has been seen by a nurse, a Physical Therapist or an Occupational Therapist, I receive either a phone call or email describing the session and how she is doing.Silverado is more than a memory care facility. Our family was so impressed by Katie and her team and Silverado ‘s outstanding program. They are all-in, present, engaged and sincerely care about the residents. Even though our father was only there a week before he passed, in that week he was able to sit up in a chair for meals, look around the facility, have lunch with me in the great room, receive visitors in a homey setting and meet some of the other residents. The nursing care was excellent, caring and professional. The Silverado staff coordinated smoothly with the outpatient hospice team to make sure his needs were met and he was comfortable. They also welcomed and worked well with his caeregiver, who had been with him for years. Katie and the team embraced our family and made us feel at home. We were able to have meals there and even sleep overnight so we could stay close to him. It was very comforting to spend his last days together in such a warm, inviting and caring environment.

Silverado had made a huge difference in my family's life. My mother was diagnosed with dementia over 3 years ago. Prior to moving her to Silverado, we had in-home care for 8 hours a day but she was having several violent outbursts pretty much every day and was miserable and depressed the rest of the time. We did not see that changing by moving her to a memory care facility...in fact, we thought things would get worse. We couldn't have been more wrong. We moved her in to Silverado a little over 5 months ago...she made the transition without incidence and she's been much more engaged and happier since her arrival. It's an engaging environment that can't be replicated with in-home care in my opinion. We can't say enough about the caregivers. It's not just that they are trained in how to care for dementia patients, they also show a genuine care and affection for the residents. I feel very comfortable knowing that my mom is in their hands. The local leadership team has been great to work with. They are always available and open to feedback and suggestions at any time.We have also developed a special bond with the other residents and their family members which I think has helped us all deal with the pain of having a loved one with dementia. The staff welcomes family members at all times and provides opportunities for us to spend time with each other and share our experiences.Silverado is a community of residents, caregivers, administrators and family members...I highly recommend it for any family member going through a similar situation.

I didn’t like the feeling of the Assisted Living communities that also had a locked floor, maybe in the basement, where they kept the residents living with memory loss. Because of this family atmosphere, everyone looks in on and asks how each other’s family member is doing. So, if you cannot visit for a period of time you know that other families will say hello and check in on your loved on. Silverado nourishes this type of culture. Another important fact is every associate is trained in dementia care. I have seen the Building Engineer walking through the community with a resident trying to help him find something. Everyone here cares. Also, it is apparent that all the staff know a lot about every resident. If someone likes to sit in the same chair every day, or drink a favorite beverage, or if someone likes to help out in an office or arrange flowers all the staff know this and go out of their way to try to incorporate these details into the resident’s daily life. She truly sees Silverado as her home and she smiles every day, which is something I haven’t seen in years. If you are looking for a community where people really care and where family members feel welcome and a valuable part of the community, Silverado is a great choice and some place you must visit.

My dad has been at Silverado since it opened after spending two years at a Silverado in Ft Worth. I am so so pleased. Memory care is a subspecialty of elder care and requires specialized care givers. The senior staff Katie has pulled together are fantastic. They are professional and more than that, caring and sincerely loving. It is not an easy thing to pull off! While there have been some growing pains that go along with getting a new place up and running I have been so impressed with their commitment to getting the right folks in place. The facility is beautiful and there are always stimulating things going on for those residents that want them. I feel so assured that while my dad sinks further away, he is surrounded by a loving place and truly wonderful people.
