My mother received excellent care from the staff. I loved the limited number of residents so that needs were met quickly. The staff truly loves those in their care! Greg, the Administrator, is always available to listen and answer any questions. I highly recommend Summerhaven ALF.
Both of my parents were residents of Summerhaven Assisted Living for 4 years. Both had advanced Parkinson's Disease and care needs that can only be described as extreme. The staff at Summerhaven became like family to all of us. They are both skillful and caring and were with my parents through many difficult times. The staff did everything possible to maintain my parents' feeling of independence despite the fact that their bodies had made them physically dependent on others. I visited frequently and the facility was always spotlessly clean. The facility feels welcoming, and the residents become a second family to each other.
There is no way to thank Greg and the Summerhaven staff enough for the amazing way they helped my husband, John, during the final months of his life. It gave us great comfort to know that he was being nurtured, and even indulged, by people who cared so much about his entire being. When John, my sister, and I came up for a visit several months before John moved there, we knew immediately it was just the right place. Not only is the facility just as warm and comfortable as one could possibly want, John was delighted and declared that “when he was ready” (no time soon, he thought) it would be the perfect home.Summerhaven provided John with immeasurable support and strength. Since he was suffering from dementia he was not able to fully understand what they were doing for him. Their graciousness in knowing and communicating that to him came from years of experience, and Greg finessed some very prickly situations so that ease replaced consternation. It took a lot of “thinking off the top of one’s head.”The food was prepared as much as possible to meet John’s off-the-wall demands with everyone going out of their way to please him. It was increasingly difficult to do that as he changed every day what he was or was not able to eat, and the way it was to be prepared. John was also allowed to grocery shop, and have a refrigerator, and other appointments in his part of the house that made all the difference in his comfort. The entire staff made him feel welcome and, yes, loved. No one appreciated it more than we, his family. He really had little true knowledge, but we did. They helped him with lots of little personal, special, things that went way beyond the “letter of the contract” outlining what to expect. How is it possible to buy such caring? One can’t, it’s not for sale at any price. They also relieved us of any guilt we might have felt about his passing. It was truly blessed, thanks to everyone there. Most people, I suspect, strive to exhibit such love, but to Summerhaven it all came naturally; it’s who they are! And we appreciate it. We can look back on his passing with such peace. He was made to feel cared for right up to the very end. I can’t imagine anyone, even family members, who could have done more or even as much. There will never be a way to recommend Summerhaven highly enough.
While at Summerhaven, my father suffered from dementia, and would occasionally become highly agitated about certain points of confusion and make himself a royal pain. We fully expected, at several points, that he would be discharged and have to be moved to a memory facility, where his quality of life would've almost certainly been significantly lower, and the expense far greater. His disruptive shenanigans were instead met with infinite compassion and patience. He was even taken around town, and all the way back to Orlando on one occasion, to dispel persistent delusional notions that repeatedly troubled him. Greg and Summerhaven staff made videos of him at the various locations, documenting his own answers, and he was subsequently shown the videos when he would inevitably forget again. This proved the most effective way to reliably calm him quickly and allow him to relax. I thought this solution was incredibly creative and caring, and far above and beyond anything I would’ve expected.I can’t say enough positive things about Summerhaven, and only hope that a place like this exists for me when it’s my time.
